Welding Technology Certificate A can be completed as well as additional welding electives at the Brooks Regional Center at Newton High School. The hours run from 8:00 am to 3:10 pm for full-time and 8:00 am to 11:10 am or 12:00 pm to 3:10 pm for part-time.
Students take classes in theory and safety as well as math and blueprint reading. They also earn credits in shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and robotic welding. The welding program is also a national American Welding Society SENSE-certified school. Students have the option of certifying in a national program.
Most welders work in manufacturing industries that produce transportation equipment, industrial machinery and equipment, and fabricated metal products.
Machine Technology is a 31-credit hour program held at the Brooks Regional Center at Newton High School. The hours run from 8:00 am to 3:10 pm for full-time and 8:00 am to 11:30 am or 12:15 pm to 3:10 pm for part-time.
Students take classes in math and print reading as well as quality control, machining practices, and CNC operations.
Using lathes, milling machines, and spindles, machinists make precision metal parts in machining shops or manufacturing firms that produce durable goods, including metalworking and industrial machinery, aircraft, or motor vehicles. Computer-control programmers and operators use computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines to produce large quantities of products.
Both programs have an advisory board of industry members that meets twice a year to provide direction for the program, ensuring that students receive the education needed to prepare for their entry into the workforce.
The tech programs are merged with the HS and follow their academic calendar (August-May). Students are expected to attend every class. Attendance policies are enforced and students may be administratively withdrawn for lack of attendance.
Students apply online and receive advising and financial aid assistance at our Newton Center, 203 E. Broadway.
The cost of attendance is dependent on the number of credits the student is enrolled in each semester. Per credit, 2018-2019 tuition and fees are $110 for a Newton merged program class plus any lab fees associated with the program. Students are also required to purchase books as well as tools and safety equipment for their program of study.
While an associate’s degree is not needed for students to enter the workforce, it is often beneficial for students to have if they are interested in growing in the profession into positions such as shop manager or supervisor. Both full-time and part-time students have the opportunity to complete additional credits beyond the certificate level to receive an Associate in Applied Science in Machine Technology or Welding.
