Memorials/Tributes

Giving to the Endowment in honor of, or tribute to someone who has touched your life is a wonderful way to say "thank you," or to provide a lasting memory of their impact on your life. Establishing a memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to honor their memory or celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or retirement.

  • Memorials are gifts of remembrance donated in the name of a loved one, friend, or colleague who has passed away. This gift may be given to the general scholarship fund or may be directed to a specific program or endowed to ensure a lasting legacy.
  • Tributes are donations given in honor of a special event for someone still living. They can be given as a gift for any event. Tributes are intended to show gratitude, respect, or admiration, an award to honor a person's accomplishments.

Establish a Scholarship

  • Endowed Scholarships enable a donor to establish a scholarship creating a lasting legacy. Few charitable investments are as productive and rewarding as endowing a scholarship. A minimum contribution of $15,000 is required to establish the scholarship. This can be a one-time gift or a pledged amount over a given time. The principal of the funds is invested to produce income, and an annual award is made to the student scholarship program. The principal is untouched, which means the endowment can generate funds indefinitely. That fact makes them uniquely valuable to the College, and therefore especially attractive to the donor who wishes to leave a legacy to Hutchinson Community College.
  • Annual Scholarships provide a yearly award to students meeting the criteria established by the donor and the Endowment office. The scholarship may be created with a one-time gift, with awards being made until the funds are depleted, or the donor may contribute the amount of the award each year. In some circumstances, a one-time scholarship is possible.

Charitable Bequests

A charitable bequest is one of the easiest ways and most flexible ways that you can leave a gift to the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Association.

  • Pecuniary Bequest: A gift of a fixed or stated sum of money designated in a donor’s will.
  • Specific Bequest: A gift of a designated or specific item in the will. The item will most likely be sold by the organization and the proceeds would benefit that nonprofit.
  • Residuary Bequest: A gift of all or a portion of the remainder of the donor’s assets after all other bequests have been made, as well as debts and taxes paid.
  • Contingent Bequest: A gift in a will made on the condition of a certain event that might or might not happen. A contingent bequest is specific and fails if the condition is not made.

Life Insurance:

There are various ways of making a gift of life insurance. The type of gift will depend on your client’s objectives, age, and family situation.

  • Giving an existing policy. If you no longer need the protection of your life insurance policy, you may surrender it to a charitable organization and continue to pay any premiums still owed, if applicable. Note: This case constitutes a transfer and not a conversion.

  • Purchasing a new policy. If you wish to make an important donation but your means are modest, you can purchase a life insurance policy and subsequently name a charitable organization as beneficiary. In this case, it is always preferable to spread out the payment of the premiums over a limited time, for example, three, five, seven, or ten years. For each premium paid, you will receive a donation receipt for the amount of that particular premium.

  • Designating a charitable organization as the beneficiary of the death benefit. The organization may be named the beneficiary of the death benefit, in whole or in part, of a life insurance policy. It can also be a second or third beneficiary. This ensures protection of the death benefit, in the case where the first beneficiary of the policy passes away before the owner of the policy. The death benefit will then support the organization you have chosen.

In many ways, using a life insurance policy makes it possible to make a major gift while protecting the inheritance of one’s heir(s).

Securities:

Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds that have appreciated are among the best ways to support the college. Appreciated securities can give the donor attractive tax benefits. The Endowment can assist you in arranging a transfer.

Matching Gift

Matching gifts are company-donated contributions that match the contributions made by their employees, thereby doubling or tripling the value of the employee’s gift. To find out if your company participates in a matching gift program, contact your human resources department for a matching gift form. Then, send it along with your gift to the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Association.

Employee Contribution Options

Hutchinson Community College employees can donate through payroll deduction. Please contact the endowment office for more information.
