Surgical Technology - AAS
The mission of the Surgical Technologist Program is " To prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession." In addition to providing efficient and quality care while preserving the safety, dignity, and individuality of the perioperative patient.
Careers
A program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians and surgical nurses, to maintain, monitor, and enforce the sterile field and adherence to aseptic technique by preoperative, surgical team, and postoperative personnel. Includes instruction in instrument and equipment sterilization and handling, surgical supplies management, wound exposure and closure, surgical computer and robot operation and monitoring, maintenance of hemostasis, and patient and team scrubbing.
Program Outcomes
- Demonstrate through the performance of surgical principles and procedures the ability to think critically and make reasonable judgments
- Demonstrate communication skills, both written and spoken, with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team
- Incorporate the roles and responsibilities of the surgical technologist as a member of the interdisciplinary team to meet the needs of the client and family
- Demonstrate accountability for actions, judgments, and responsibilities consistent with one's scope of practice within the legal and ethical framework of the surgical technologist
- Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth by participating in activities that enhance continuous learning, self-development and ensure high standards of surgical practice
- Demonstrate accountability for practicing in a manner that promotes the protection of the surgical team and surgical patient's safety
- Pass the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technologists
