The AD Nursing program prepares students to take the NCLEX-RN exam for state licensure to practice as a registered nurse. The AD Nursing program is accredited by the Kansas Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Graduates have the foundation to continue their education at a baccalaureate granting institution.

As members of an inter-professional team they provide critical input into the health and well-being of individuals. They combine the science and art of nursing practice, and make critical judgments and decisions regarding the care provided. Nurses perform a myriad of roles, responsibilities and tasks of which the most familiar is care-giver. Their work environment is just as vast: hospitals, clinics, long-term care, military bases, correctional facilities, and educational faculties to name a few. Professional nurses deliver culturally competent, safe and effective care with compassion and expertise.

  • Application

    Application to the Hybrid option may be submitted May 15 through August 1, for the class starting the following January.

    The selection committee meets on an as needed basis to consider applicants who have completed the application process. The completion of the application is the student's responsibility.  If you are not selected for the January start date then you will need to submit a new application, retake admission exam, submit transcipt for any additional courses taken each year.

      Graduates of an accredited high school or the equivalent are eligible for admission to HutchCC. Students who do not meet college entrance requirements may enroll with special permission.

      Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is an open Admissions Institution. Students are admitted in one of the categories listed below. Students who have not submitted all required documentation are admitted on a provisional basis. Provisionally admitted students may enroll and attend classes pending receipt of transcripts and other required documents, but cannot be certified for participation in activities, or receive financial aid. Students remain on provisional status until all required documents are certified by the Director of Admissions.

      Once admitted, students retain their admission status in the category in which they were originally admitted unless the student seeks to change his or her status. If a student seeks to change his or her admission’s status, he/she should contact the HutchCC admissions office in order to be re-admitted. The college seeks to regularly update student information found on the admissions application.

    • Reapplication

      Persons who are not accepted into a class may reapply as early as March 1, by retaking the Admissions Exam, resubmitting an application and transcript of additional courses taken.  For students who have completed the prerequisites, consideration will be given to their most recent 11 hours within the curriculum (admission criteria of 2.75 or higher prerequisite GPA must be met).  Grades must be "C" or higher in any course, and students overall GPA must be 2.0 or higher.

    • Criminal Background Checks/ Drug Screens

      All students admitted to the nursing program will be required to submit to a complete background check and drug screen.  The cost of the background check and drug screen is the applicant's responsibility.  Contact our office with specific questions.

    • Selection Criteria

      Each phase of the admission process will be evaluated according to the point system. A sample of the scoring sheet is included in the applicaton packet found under Program Details/Application/Application Checklist.  Applicants will be rank ordered based upon the total points received.

    • Waiting List

      Students on the waiting list must continue to meet all admission criteria to be able to fill vacancies if they become available.  The waiting list goes away once the class starts.  Each application period everyone starts over and must complete a new admissions exam, submit a new application, and transcript of additonal courses taken.

  • Additional Requirements

    Have graduated from an accredited school of practical nursing in the United States.

    Hold an unencumbered PN license in the State in which the Applicant resides.

    All LPN's must provide documentation for IV Therapy certification.

    If graduation was more than three years ago, LPN's must have 1000 hours documented LPN work experience within the last three years.

    Science courses (A & P and Microbiology) are valid for up to seven (7) years.

    Complete equivalent transferable prerequisites general education requirements.

    Technical Standards for ADN Program

    Students must possess:

    Visual ability: Acuity must be sufficient to assess clients and their environment and to implement the nursing care plans that are developed from such assessments.

    Hearing ability: Must be sufficient to assess clients and their environments and to implement the nursing care plans that are developed for such assessments.

    Factory ability: Must be sufficient to assess clients and their environments and to implement the nursing care plans that are developed for such assessments.

    Tactile ability: Must be sufficient to assess clients and their environments and to implement the nursing care plans that are developed for such assessments.

    Fine motor skills: Must be sufficient to perform psychomotor skills necessary for client care.

    Ability to speak, comprehend, read, and write in English at a level that effectively communicates with clients, families, significant others, and groups respecting social cultural, and spiritual diversity.

  • Articulation

    A licensed practical nurse (LPN) may request advanced placement in the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Individuals are encouraged to contact the Director of the Nursing Program.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM

Transfer Guidelines

Any student who is attending another college may request to transfer into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.

The following steps provide specific guidelines that must be met:

  1. Nursing classes from the prior college would need to be current and be completed less than three (3) years prior to transfer request or evaluation.
  1. If the student has been out longer than three (3) years they would have to start over with the first semester of the nursing program.

If the student meets the requirement for number one (1) the following must be met:

       1.  Must have completed the following pre/co-requisite education courses prior to beginning any   nursing courses:

  1. Human Anatomy and Physiology (must be within the last 7 years)
  2. English Composition I
  3. Any other co-requisite course prior to the semester being requested.
  4. Meet the time frame requirements for other college courses.

         2.  Complete application for admission to the college and send official transcripts.

  1. Meet program admission policies requirements regarding course grades and overall college GPA of 2.0 as well as the program GPA of 2.75 for general education courses for the program.
  1. Meet with the Director of Nursing or designee for determination of requirements related to competency testing (didactic and technical skills).
  1. Complete the standardized examinations and/or Final Exam related to each nursing course being considered for admission at the competence level set (i.e. Fundamentals, Medical Surgical I, II, III, etc.). You may schedule these exams with the program secretary at 620-665-4930.  The costs of the exams are the responsibility of the applicant.  These exams can only be taken once, so please review ahead of time.
  1. Demonstrate technical competency and math proficiency at the level of requested readmission through skills check-off and math exam.

         7.   Transfer students will be ranked according to admission criteria and meet all transfer policies.

All requests will be evaluated on an individual basis.
