Exploring African Art

Ghana, West Africa

 

 

 

 

Study traditional West African arts with indigenous teachers in villages surrounding Kumasi, Ghana. Opportunities to work with weaving, batik, pottery, bronze casting, and glass bead making artists, either in a small group or individually.  There will also be ample time to shop in the local markets; visit museums, the Asantehene’s palace, a school, a slave fortress; and experience a tree-top canopy walk. Special arrangements can be made for drumming or dance lessons, woodcarving, goldsmithing, or other arts if there is sufficient interest.

Homestays and or visits can also be arranged.

July 13-14

 

Depart east coast airport

 

 

 

 

July 15-16

 

Accra, capital of Ghana, visit National Museum, Art Centre, & fantasy coffin making in Teshie.

 

          Breakfast at our hotel in Accra

 

 

July 17

 

Travel to Kumasi, stopping at weekly bead market in Koforidua.

 

July 18-31

 

Daily visits to villages for weaving, dyeing, bronze working, bead making, etc. Visit Asantehene’s palace, Jubilee Museum, university, school, churches, and shrines.

Travel to Cape Coast for slave fortresses and rain forest.

Applicants:

 

 

This trip is intended primarily for artists and art educators, scholars in African studies, art history, anthropology, and adults with a strong interest in traditional West African art and culture. Participants need to be broad-minded, flexible, and adventurous regarding foods and social experiences. Participants must be in excellent physical condition.

 

Cost: approx. $2895. plus airfare

 

Cost Includes local transportation in Ghana, hotels, breakfasts, local guides, teachers, all program and entrance fees. Participants are responsible for their own passport, visas and inoculations fees, as well as for their own lunches and dinners during the program.
