When Sarah Myers played at Hutchinson
Community College, she was an integral part of the group that helped
put the Lady Dragons on the national volleyball map.
Now in her first season as an
assistant coach with the Lady Dragons, she once again has a hand in
keeping the Lady Dragons program on top.
Known as Sarah Smith in her playing
days, Myers was considered by HCC head coach Ronda Shirley as the
first major signing for her reclamation project of the HCC
volleyball program. Before Myers’ arrival at HCC in 1999, the Lady
Dragons hadn’t had a winning season in seven years.
Myers helped HCC snap that skid right
away, leading the Lady Dragons to a 28-18 record and a fifth-place
finish in the Jayhawk West in her freshman season. As an outside
hitter, Myers averaged nearly three kills per game and earned
first-team All-Region VI honors.
The 2000 season was a breakthrough
year for HCC volleyball and Myers was once again right in the middle
of it. Myers earned first-team All-Jayhawk West and first-team
All-Region honors as Hutchinson exploded for a 37-13 record and a
third-place finish in the Jayhawk West. HCC earned tournament
championships at Hesston College and Independence and Myers was
chosen all-tournament in both events.
Myers averaged nearly 3.5 kills per
game, but showed a tremendous all-around floor game in leading HCC
to the second-most wins in program history to that point. She was
also the unquestioned leader of the Lady Dragons, a fact that didn’t
escape her head coach.
After HCC, Myers got away from
volleyball after enrolling at the University of Kansas and joined
the Jayhawks rowing team. Myers earned 2002 Big XII Newcomer of the
Year honors in 2002. The 2003 Jayhawks won first place in the Novice
Eight of the Big XII.
Once Myers’ eligibility was
completed, she remained with the KU rowing team as an assistant
coach and recruiter from 2004-06. In both 2005 and 2006, KU won the
Sunflower Showdown with rival Kansas State.
Born on July 28, 1981 in Larned,
Kan., Myers graduated from Larned High School in 1999, from HCC in
2001 with an Associate’s degree in social science and from the
University of Kansas in 2004 with a degree in sports management.
Myers is married to William Myers.
The couple is expecting their first child next year.
