LADY DRAGONS REMAIN

NO. 14 IN NJCAA VOLLEYBALL POLL

By Steve Carpenter

HCC Sports Information Director

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Going 2-0 last week, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team remained No. 14 in this week’s NJCAA Division I volleyball poll, released on Tuesday.

Hutchinson is 10-4 heading into its home volleyball tournament, the Caribbean Tan Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Sports Arena.

This is the 52nd time in the last 54 polls dating back to 2003 that the Lady Dragons have been ranked in the NJCAA Division I national poll.

Hutchinson had two 3-0 victories during the last rankings period, sweeping Dodge City in a Jayhawk Conference battle that evened HCC’s league record to 2-2. Hutch also dispatched of winless Hesston College on the road in three easy sets.

Hutchinson and Seward County continue to be the only ranked Division I Jayhawk Conference teams. Seward County dropped 3 of 4 matches over the weekend and slips two spots to No. 13.

Five of the eight teams in this weekend’s’ Caribbean Tan Invitational are ranked teams, a sixth is receiving notes and the seventh was ranked as high as No. 13 in an earlier poll this season before falling out.

Hutchinson will open with perennial Missouri junior college volleyball power Jefferson College (6-6) at Noon on Friday and will close the day with No. 15 New Mexico Military Institute (16-2) at 4 p.m. on Friday. No. 10 Frank Phillips College (10-8) and Seminole State (10-6) are HCC’s Saturday opponents at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Seminole State is receiving votes.

Rounding out the field is No. 5 Iowa Western (14-2), No. 8 Missouri State University-West Plains (8-5) and Pratt (8-6).

Three Lady Dragons continue to be ranked in the Top 50 of the NJCAA Division I statistical categories. Sophomore right side/middle blocker Debbie Ohl is second in the NJCAA in blocking at 1.43 blocks per set and is 45th in kills at 2.65 per set.

Freshman Kate Morrell is No. 4 in blocking at 1.27 blocks per set. Freshman setter Lindsay Dusin is 35th in set assists at 6.51 per set.
