HESSTON – The No. 14
Hutchinson Community College volleyball team headed into an
eight-day mid-season break on Thursday with a decisive 3-0 victory
at winless Hesston College.
The Lady Dragons
dominated Hesston 25-10, 25-16, 25-17 at the Yost Center. But the
inconsistent play that had plagued the Lady Dragons (9-4) through
the first few weeks of the season cropped up again.
As a team, HCC hit
.373, but was outblocked by Hesston 6-3. HCC also had 10 service
errors and a variety of ball-handing errors throughout. What’s more,
Hesston is 0-13 and has lost 28 consecutive sets with only seven of
those reaching 20 points.
“Inconsistent play
that we are going to have to get harnessed,” HCC head coach Ronda
Shirley said. “We have to work to make our play more consistent. We
aren’t making people earn their points and we are playing sloppy.
You wouldn’t know it looking at our attack stats.”
Freshman Kate
Morrell had 11 kills on .526 hitting to lead the Lady Dragons
offensively. Morrell also added two blocks and a service ace.
Sophomore Debbie Ohl hit a .416 on eight kills. Sophomore Bailea
Phelan hit a career high .294 with seven kills and a career
high-tying four ace serves. Freshman Beth Cornwell had five kills
and hit a .416.
Freshman setter
Lindsay Dusin had 13 assists and three aces, while freshman Emme
Russell had 11 assists and two ace serves.
Sophomore libero
Carol Logato had a team-high eight digs.
Every Lady Dragon
player saw action on Thursday night.
“I feel like I
should be able to play everybody and our intensity and level
shouldn’t drop that much,” Shirley said. “The kids off the bench did
a good job.”
Aggressive serving
again paid off for the Lady Dragons on Thursday night. One night
after tallying 13 service aces against Dodge City, Hutchinson had 12
against Hesston. The main difference was there was 10 service errors
tacked on against the Larks. Six different HCC players had at least
one service ace.
HCC’s serving was
impressive in the first set. With Hutch up only 6-4 in the opening
set, Dusin had three aces in an 8-0 to break the set open. Phelan
followed that with a 7-0 run, including four aces to build the lead
to 21-9.
Hutchinson hit .428
in the first set, .461 in the second and .277 in the third set. But
Hesston put up a pesky block and added to the many service errors,
the second and third sets were closer than expected. HCC had six
service errors in the second and three more in the third set.
“It’s there. I know
it’s there,” Shirley said of her team’s potential. “I believe it’s
there. I have to do my job as a coach to get it out of them.”
The Lady Dragons are
now off until next Friday when they open play in the Caribbean Tan
Invitational at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson will play Jefferson
College at noon and New Mexico Military at 6 p.m. on Friday. Hutch
will play Frank Phillips College at 11 a.m. and Seminole State at 3
p.m. on Saturday.
