LADY DRAGONS REMAIN NO. 13

IN NJCAA VOLLEYBALL POLL

HCC Sports Information

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Despite three victories over Top 10 competition in the first two weeks of the season, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team remains No. 13 in the first regular-season poll released on Wednesday.

HCC’s appearance in the latest Division I national poll is the 50th appearance in the last 52 polls dating back to the beginning of the 2003 season.

Over the last rankings period, the Lady Dragons went 4-2 overall. HCC started the week with a four-set loss to open the Jayhawk Conference season at then-No. 18 Pratt on Sept. 1. HCC turned around two days later and defeated No. 10 Hillsborough on its home floor in five sets.

Over the weekend, Hutchinson decisively swept past State College of Florida, St. Petersburg College and Gulf Coast Community College before falling to Hillsborough in four tight sets in the rematch at the Hillsborough Invitational.

Hutchinson is now 3-3 overall against nationally ranked competition with all three wins coming against Top 10 opponents. All three season losses have also come to ranked teams.

With its victory over Hutchinson on its home floor, Pratt vaulted past HCC in the latest poll, jumping seven spots to No. 11. Pratt and Hutchinson are the only Jayhawk Conference Division I teams to be ranked this week.

Defending national champion Blinn College remains the No. 1 team in the NJCAA. North Idaho, Salt Lake, Western Nebraska and Miami-Dade round out the top five.

Hutchinson has three home matches, all league encounters, this week. Starting tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 9), HCC plays host to Colby. On Saturday, the Lady Dragons play host to Seward County, one the preseason favorites to win the conference, at 2 p.m., and Dodge City at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
