HCC VOLLEYBALL TEAM FINISHES

STRONG TRIP TO FLORIDA WITH SPLIT

HCC Sports Information

Saturday, September 5, 2009

TAMPA, Fla. – The 13th-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team finished off a 4-1 trip to its first-ever venture to the state of Florida on Saturday with a split of two matches on the final day of the Hillsborough Invitational.

The Lady Dragons earned its third-straight dominant sweep with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-11 victory over Gulf Coast Community College to open the day on Saturday. HCC’s final match of the weekend turned out to be its only loss as No. 10 Hillsborough got some revenge on the Lady Dragons with a close four-set loss, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25.

Just two days before, Hutchinson defeated Hillsborough in five sets.

“We still played well against them,” HCC head coach Ronda Shirley said. “They had our middles figured out this time, and our passing was not as good as there’s was.

“The first time, our passing was better, but we still played them close and they are a very strong team.”

The Lady Dragons (7-3 overall) are now 3-3 over nationally ranked competition and the three victories have come against Top-10 competition.

The Lady Dragons will play their home opener on Wednesday night in a Jayhawk West match vs. Colby at 6:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

GULF COAST RECAP (BOXSCORE)

The Lady Dragons hit .363 as a team as freshman setter Emme Russell took the reigns in her first career start. Russell had 24 assists with one kill and one block assist in her first start.

Sophomore Karol Marins hit .467 on a team-high nine kills and six total blocks to lead Hutchinson. Sophomores Shelley Kemper and Debbie Ohl finished with seven kills each. Ohl added six blocks and seven digs with a season-high three ace serves.

Freshman middle blocker Kate Morrell had six kills and four blocks. Sophomore Carol Logato had five kills and four digs.

Hutchinson had 11 team blocks against Gulf Coast.

The three sets not allowing 20 or more points were the seventh, eighth, and ninth consecutive sets in the tournament for the Lady Dragons to do so.

HILLSBOROUGH RECAP (BOXSCORE)

Marins led three Lady Dragons in double figures in kills, but Hillsborough had a bit better total offensive package than HCC in the rematch between the two nationally ranked teams.

All three of HCC’s losses have come in four-set matches.

Marins completed a strong weekend with 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Logato had 12 kills with seven digs.

Ohl posted her first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 blocks. Ohl also had six blocks and totaled 22 blocks in the four invitational matches.

Russell had a season-high 36 assists with five digs.

HCC hit .202 as a team and had 13 team blocks against the powerful-hitting Hillsborough team.
