TAMPA, Fla. – The
13th-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team finished off a 4-1
trip to its first-ever venture to the state of Florida on Saturday with a
split of two matches on the final day of the Hillsborough Invitational.
The Lady Dragons earned its
third-straight dominant sweep with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-11 victory over Gulf
Coast Community College to open the day on Saturday. HCC’s final match of
the weekend turned out to be its only loss as No. 10 Hillsborough got some
revenge on the Lady Dragons with a close four-set loss, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25,
18-25.
Just two days before,
Hutchinson defeated Hillsborough in five sets.
“We still played well
against them,” HCC head coach Ronda Shirley said. “They had our middles
figured out this time, and our passing was not as good as there’s was.
“The first time, our passing
was better, but we still played them close and they are a very strong team.”
The Lady Dragons (7-3
overall) are now 3-3 over nationally ranked competition and the three
victories have come against Top-10 competition.
The Lady Dragons will play
their home opener on Wednesday night in a Jayhawk West match vs. Colby at
6:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
