HILLSBOROUOGH, Fla. –
Sophomore Debbie Ohl combined for 18 kills and sophomore Carol Logato had 17
total kills in Hutchinson Community College’s two 3-0 volleyball sweeps on
Friday during the first day of the Hillsborough Invitational.
The 13th-ranked Lady Dragons
didn’t allow more than 17 points in a single set on Friday. Hutchinson
defeated State College of Florida 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 and then turned around
to sweep St. Petersburg College 25-13, 25-10, 25-12.
The Lady Dragons (6-2
overall) have now won three-straight matches in the state of Florida with
two more to come on Saturday. Hutchinson will play Gulf Coast Community
College and get a rematch with No. 10 Hillsborough on Saturday. HCC defeated
Hillsborough in five sets on Thursday night.
“Our serving was good and
aggressive,” HCC head coach Ronda Shirley said. “The setters did a good job
of delivering the ball to the hitters. We were strong at the net and made
our opponents have some mental errors. We were strong at the net.”

Ohl led the Lady Dragons
with a team-high 10 kills and hit .400. Ohl also had nine digs and a
team-high six blocks.
The Lady Dragons were once
again balanced offensively. Logato had eight kills and five digs. Freshman
Kate Morrell had six kills, hitting .333, with four blocks. Sophomore
Shelley Kemper had three kills.
Freshman setter Emme Russell
had 16 assists and six digs. Freshman Lindsay Dusin had 10 assists, four
digs and two aces.

The Lady Dragons hit a
season-high .400 as a team with 10 blocks against St. Petersburg.
HCC got strong performances
from the left side with Logato and sophomore Karol Marins, who combined for
19 kills against St. Petersburg.
“Logato and Marins are doing
a good job on the left side,” Shirley said. “They are taking was pressure
off of the middles. Marins is more confident and is trusting her swing more.
Logato brings a spark and a flow to the team. Taking off the libero shirt
allows Logato to be a threat all over the court.”
Logato finished with 11
kills on .625 hitting with four ace serves and one block. Marins had eight
kills on .538 hitting with two blocks.
Ohl had another outstanding
game, getting several back-row kills. She finished with eight kills overall,
hitting .437 with nine digs, four blocks and two aces.
Kemper had a career-high
seven kills with four blocks. Morrell had six kills, hitting .400 with five
blocks and six digs.
Russell had 23 assists with
six digs and three aces. Dusin had nine assists. |
