LADY DRAGONS SWEEP NO. 3 WEST PLAINS,

KIRKWOOD; GO 3-1 TO START SEASON

HCC Sports Information

Saturday, August 29, 2009

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The 13th-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team finished off the Iowa Western Reiver Invitational in style on Saturday with a pair of three-set sweeps.

On Saturday morning, the Lady Dragons upended No. 3 Missouri State-West Plains 26-24, 25-18, 25-22. HCC then toppled Division II Kirkwood Community College 25-23, 25-21, 25-11 to finish the Reiver Classic 3-1.

The Lady Dragons will now open Jayhawk Conference play on Tuesday night at Pratt, and then it’s off to Florida for the weekend and the Hillsborough Invitational in Hillsborough, Fla.

“I told the girls to not get too caught up with that win because it's tough to tell much from preseason polls,” HCC coach Ronda Shirley said. “But West Plains always is in the top 10 and a big rival for an out-of-state team.”

WEST PLAINS RECAP (Summary)

The Lady Dragons snapped a five-match losing streak to West Plains and defeated the Grizzlies for the first time since 2006.

Hutchinson hit a tournament-high .263 as a team and tallied 8.5 total blocks with three aces serves against West Plains.

Freshman Kate Morrell led the Lady Dragons with a tournament-high 15 kills on .345 hitting. Morrell added four block assists and three digs.

Sophomore Debbie Ohl had 12 kills on .308 hitting with six digs and four blocks.

Freshman setter Lindsay Dusin had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs.

HCC was on fire on sets 2 and 3, hitting .462 in the second and .303 in the third set.
