COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa –
Blocking and back-row defense led the way for the 13th-ranked Hutchinson
Community College volleyball team on Friday against a pair of nationally
ranked opponents on opening day at the Iowa Western Reiver Classic.
Hutchinson opened with a
sweep of Division II, No. 5 Des Moines Area Community College 25-17, 25-16,
25-23. The Lady Dragons then pushed Division I, No. 6 and invitational host
Iowa Western 20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25.
The Lady Dragons will
conclude play in Iowa on Saturday with a pair of matches against No. 3
Missouri State-West Plains at 11 a.m. and Division II Kirkwood Community
College at 3 p.m.
“We really battled against
Iowa Western” HCC head coach Ronda Shirley said. “The freshmen were a little
nervous to start and I knew they would be. Once they got over that, we
battled. Even the games we lost, we posted pretty good numbers.”

As a team, HCC hit just .175
but had 11 total blocks and seven ace serves against Des Moines Area. Total
team digs weren’t available.
“Our points were more
defensive points, which was a good thing,” Shirley said. “Our defense was
really good and our blocking was on.”
Sophomores Bailea Phelan and
Debbie Ohl and freshman Beth Cornwell had six kills each. Cornwell hit a
.667 and had three block points. Ohl added five blocks.
Sophomore Karol Marins had
four kills and a block. Freshman Kate Morrell had three kills and a
match-high six blocks.
Freshman Lindsay Dusin
earned the start at setter and tallied 22 assists, two blocks and one ace
serve.
IOWA WESTERN RECAP
(Summary)
Marins got it going against
No. 6 Iowa Western in the second match of the day.
Marins blasted a career-high
16 kills, hitting a .313 kill percentage, and had two blocks in the Lady
Dragons’ four-set loss to the Reivers on their home court.
“Our hitters were on against
Iowa Western,” Shirley said. “Karol was really on.”
Morrell had nine kills on
.350 hitting against the Reivers. In sets two and three, Morrell had a .750
hitting percentage. The freshman from Ogallala, Neb., finished with five
blocks.
Ohl had 10 kills and five
blocks and Phelan had four kills, two blocks and one ace.
Dusin posted 31 assists and
three blocks.
“Lindsay was doing much
better against Iowa Western,” Shirley said. “She was much more comfortable
in the second match. She’s starting to understand when to get people the
ball. She did a good job of setting our hitters at the right time.”
The Lady Dragons hit .169 as
a team and put up 11 total blocks against just one blocking error. |
