CONCORDIA – Sophomores Ludmila Amaral and
KeAnne Langford continued to climb career record charts and the No. 13
Hutchinson Community College volleyball wrapped up a first-round bye for the
Region VI Tournament with a 3-0 pounding of Cloud County in a Jayhawk West
matchup on Wednesday night at the Cloud County Thunderdome.
Hutchinson’s victory, combined with Barton
County’s five-game victory over Seward County at Great Bend on Wednesday,
secures the second seed for Hutchinson (23-15, 7-1 Jayhawk West, 4-1
Region). That means HCC won’t have to play in a winner-take-all play-in
match next week and can wait for the double-elimination Region VI Tournament
on Nov. 4-5 at the Sports Arena.
Amaral had three ace serves against Cloud
County to become the fourth Lady Dragon in program history to record 100
aces in a career. She moved past Thais Franca (2004-05) and Ashton Thomas
(2002-03) into fourth place and trails Roberta Santos (2004) by only one ace
for third.
Langford, HCC’s libero, had 22 digs for her
27th match in double figure digs and ninth with 20 or more digs this season.
She moves into eighth place on HCC’s career digs list with 697, moving past
Jayme Schlake (2002-03) into eighth. Langford is just two digs out of
seventh place (Thomas, 699) on the career list.
The Lady Dragons dominated the Thunderbirds,
hitting a .348, the 12th time this season HCC has hit better than .300 and
the fourth-highest team-hitting percentage this season.
HCC was also dominant on defense with 87 digs
and nine blocks. The seven points scored in Game 2 by Cloud County tied a
Hutchinson record for fewest points allowed in a single game.
“We came out with a lot more intensity than
we did last week against Colby,” HCC head coach Ronda Shirley said. “We were
fundamentally strong. We really couldn’t ask more of them.”
Freshman Molly Bergkamp had her 10th
double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs. She hit a .400 and
had two blocks.
Freshman setter Melissa Gmur posted her 12th
double-double of the season with 31 assists and 19 digs to along with her
four kills, three aces and one block.
Amaral hit a .470 on nine kills with 2.5
blocks and nine digs. Sophomore Nikki Canon had a career-high .727 hitting
percentage on seven kills and two blocks. Freshman LaToya Taylor had seven
kills and 2.5 blocks. Freshman Amanda Stucky had nine digs.
The Lady Dragons will complete the 2007
regular season at home on Monday night against Division II, No. 3 Cowley
College at 6:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena. The game was added earlier in the
day on Wednesday to break up the 11-day gap from the Cloud County match to
the start of Region VI. |
