By Steve Carpenter

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Two Hutchinson Community College volleyball players earned national weekly honors for their play last weekend.

Sophomore All-American middle blocker Ludmila Amaral and sophomore libero KeAnne Langford were named NJCAA National Hitter and Libero of the Week after two tremendous efforts at the 2007 Tyson Foods Invitational last weekend at the Sports Arena.

Amaral, from Cubatao, Brazil, averaged 4.4 kills, 2.1 digs, 1.9 blocks and 0.4 service aces and had a .413 attack percentage over 20 games last week.

Amaral recorded three double-doubles on the week, leading Hutchinson to victories over two ranked opponents. In a win over No. 15 San Jacinto she had 20 kills, 10 digs, eight blocks and four service aces. She followed that with a school-record 26 kills, 12 digs and eight blocks in a win over No. 17 Northeastern Junior College.

In the only loss of the week she had 17 kills, 12 digs and five blocks against No. 6 Iowa Western.

Langford, from Meade, Kan., averaged 6.6 digs per game over 20 games last week. Hutchinson finished the week going 2-1 against ranked opponents.

In a win over No. 15 San Jacinto Langford collected a career-high 29 digs, which was the third-most in school history in a match of any length.

She followed that with 18 digs in a win over No. 17 Northeastern and 28 in a loss to No. 6 Iowa Western.

In five matches last week, Langford had 28 or more digs in four matches.
