PRATT – The 16th-ranked Hutchinson Community
College volleyball team was facing game-point against on Wednesday night
during the Lady Dragons’ Jayhawk West battle at Pratt.
HCC wound up scoring the final three points
of the opening game against the Beavers and wound up sweeping a pesky bunch
of Beavers 32-30, 30-22, 30-19 to run their Jayhawk West winning streak to
28 matches.
“We were hitting pretty strong,” HCC head
coach Ronda Shirley said. “I heard that Pratt plays really good defense and
doesn’t let a lot of balls hit the floor. I thought our hitters were hitting
really strong. They were in the right place at the right time. Pratt played
well.”
Hutchinson’s overall offensive numbers
weren’t eye-popping, but defensively the Lady Dragons (16-10 overall, 4-0
Jayhawk West) were matching the Beavers dig for dig.
Sophomore KeAnne Langford posted a
career-high 28 digs to lead a stingy HCC floor defense.
Langford's 28 digs were the second-most ever in HCC history in a
three-game match and the fifth-most ever recorded
in any length of Lady Dragon match.
Other Lady Dragons were strong defensively as
well. Freshman Molly Bergkamp had 15 digs, while sophomore Nikki Canon had
nine digs and sophomore Karalee Langford had six digs.
At the net, All-American Ludmila Amaral led
the Lady Dragons with five total blocks. Bergkamp, Canon and freshman LaToya
Taylor had two blocks each.
“As the game went on our block took over,”
Shirley said. “(Pratt) took Garden and Colby both to four. We had to play
well to win.”
Bergkamp led the Lady Dragons offensively
with nine kills. Amaral had seven kills. Sophomore Sarah Unruh had only six
kills despite getting several good swings. Canon had six kills and Taylor
had 5.
Karalee Langford had four kills and a block
to go with her season-high 22 assists. Freshman setter Melissa Gmur had two
kills and 11 assists.
The Lady Dragons now face four quality
opponents in the 2007 Tyson Foods Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the
Sports Arena. HCC will face Jefferson College for the third time this season
at 3 p.m. and No. 15 San Jacinto College at 7 p.m. on Friday. HCC will meet
No. 17 Northeastern Junior College at Noon and No. 6 Iowa Western, the
defending NJCAA national champion, at 4 p.m. on Saturday. |
