GREAT BEND – The 15th-ranked Hutchinson
Community College volleyball team split two matches on the final day of the
Barton County Invitational on Saturday.
In the process, the Lady Dragons saw two long
winning streaks that dated back to 2004 come to an end.
With Barton County defeating HCC 30-21,
30-25, 31-29, the Lady Dragons had a 58-match winning streak against all
Jayhawk Conference opponents snapped. Also HCC had its 49-match winning
streak against Jayhawk West opponents broken. It was the first victory for
Barton County since the 2003 Region VI Tournament championship match.
The Lady Dragons still have a winning streak
in designated Jayhawk West matches of 27, which will be put to the test on
Wednesday night at Pratt.
Hutchinson (15-10) rallied to defeat William Woods College 30-11, 30-18,
30-21 to
go 3-1 in the tournament.
Against Barton County, sophomore Sarah Unruh
had a team-high 10 kills with five digs and two blocks to lead the Lady
Dragons. All-American Ludmila Amaral hit a .466 with eight kills, two blocks
and two aces. Freshman Molly Bergkamp had seven kills.
Freshman setter Melissa Gmur had 32 assists,
seven digs and three kills.
The Lady Dragons had a balanced offensive
attack against William Woods with Bergkamp leading the way with nine kills.
Sophomore Nikki Canon hit a .470 with eight kills. Amaral hit a .466 with
seven kills, two blocks and two ace serves.
Unruh and freshman LaToya Taylor had five
kills each, while sophomore setter Karalee Langford had 19 assists to go
along with a career-high four kills and two blocks. |
