Sophomore Sarah Unruh had a career-high 18
kills while All-American Ludmila Amaral had a combined 30 kills to lead the
No. 15 Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a pair of victories
on Friday at the Barton County Invitational.
This tournament was a late add to the
Hutchinson schedule when the Lady Dragons joined the Barton County five-team
field after Alvin Community College pulled out of the tournament.
HCC handed Division II, No. 2 Cowley College
its first defeat of the season in the first match on Friday, knocking off
the Tigers in four games, 30-26, 25-30, 30-21, 30-23. Hutchinson then swept
Labette 30-21, 30-17, 30-12 to run its winning streak against Jayhawk
Conference opponents to 58 straight matches.
The Lady Dragons will get their first look
this season at No. 10 Barton County at 11 a.m. Saturday. HCC will also play
William Woods at 3 p.m.
Against Cowley, Unruh hit a season-high .485
for her career-high 18 kills. Amaral hit a .411 and tied Unruh for game-high
honors with 18 kills. She also had three blocks and one ace.
Freshman Molly Bergkamp had her fifth
double-double of the season with 12 kills and 17 digs. She also had three
blocks. Freshman setter Melissa Gmur had 47 assists with six kills, six ace
serves and two blocks. Sophomore libero KeAnne Langford had 14 digs and two
aces.
HCC (14-9) improves its record against
nationally ranked teams to 4-8.
Against Labette, Amaral hit .700 or better
for the second time this season and third time in her career after hitting a
.705 on 12 kills. She had no errors in 17 attacks and she had four blocks to
move past Kelli Segboer (2001-02) into third place on HCC’s career block
list.
Bergkamp had eight kills and eight blocks,
hitting a .200. Sophomore Nikki Canon had five kills, hitting .300, with one
block and one ace. Unruh had four kills, while freshman Amanda Smith had
three kills. Freshman LaToya Taylor had four kills and five blocks.
In two games, Gmur had 21 assists and one
ace. Sophomore setter Karalee Langford had seven assists. |
