In their previous two trips to the nationally
renowned Salt Lake Invitational, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball
team has not competed in the championship bracket once pool play has been
completed.
Coming off an impressive showing last weekend
at the Iowa Western/Molten Classic and a not-so-impressive sweep of Hesston
College on Tuesday, the Lady Dragons have high hopes of earning a berth in
the Salt Lake Invitational championship bracket in 2007.
Hutchinson (6-2) has No. 4 Salt Lake, College of Eastern Utah and Pitt Community
College in its pool. The Lady Dragons will also play two crossover matches
against teams from the other two pools. Hutchinson will also play North
Idaho, the team that defeated the Lady Dragons in the quarterfinals of the
2006 NJCAA National Tournament, and No. 12 College of Southern Idaho.
Also in the Salt Lake 12-team field are No. 5
and 2006 national runner-up Western Nebraska, No. 8 Jefferson College, No.
22 Northeastern Junior College and Division II, No. 4 Illinois Central
College.
Two years ago, the Lady Dragons were bounced
in the consolation bracket semifinals. Then last season, the Lady Dragons
rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat College of Southern Idaho in five
thrilling games in the consolation finals.
Already this season, HCC has wins over No. 17
Lake Land and No. 15 Indian Hills, with a pair of close losses against No. 1
Iowa Western and No. 2 Missouri State-West Plains.
The Lady Dragons open with College of Eastern
Utah at 9:45 a.m. MT on Friday morning. HCC will play Pitt at 12:15 p.m. MT,
Salt Lake at 1:30 p.m. MT and North Idaho at 4 p.m. MT to close out the
Friday schedule.
Hutch will play College of Southern Idaho at
10:15 a.m. MT on Saturday to close out pool play. To advance to the
championship bracket, the Lady Dragons must finish first or second in their
pool.
