COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Hutchinson
Community College volleyball team squared off against three of the nation’s
best teams on Saturday at the Iowa Western/Molten Classic.
HCC went 1-2 to finish fourth in the
tournament, starting the 2007 season 5-2.
“It was promising,” HCC head coach Ronda
Shirley said. “I thought we ended up better than we would.”
HCC, which started pool play going 4-0 on
Friday, opened with a tough 2-1 victory over Indian Hills, defeating the
Warriors 30-26, 23-30, 15-10.
The Lady Dragons had a chance to advance to
the championship match, but fell to arch-rival Missouri State-West Plains
30-28, 30-25 to finish pool play 5-1.
Hutch then faced defending national champion
and tournament host Iowa Western in the third-place match. The Reivers
defeated the Lady Dragons 30-22, 30-28.
Sophomore middle blocker Ludmila Amaral and
freshmen setter Melissa Gmur were named to the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore Sara Unruh had a big day on
Saturday with 27 kills in three matches. Gmur finished the day on Saturday
with 59 combined assists.
Amaral had 11 kills in the victory over
Indian Hills, the team that defeated Hutchinson in the quarterfinals of the
2004 NJCAA National Tournament.
The Lady Dragons travel to Hesston College on
Tuesday night for a best-of 5 match against the Larks. First serve is 6:30
p.m. Hutchinson will then travel to Salt Lake City for the Salt Lake
Invitational, which features several of last year’s teams from the 2006
NJCAA national tournament field.
