COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned four victories on opening day of the 2007 season at the Iowa Western/Molten Classic on Friday at the Mid-America Center.

The Lady Dragons opened the tournament with an impressive 30-22, 30-22 over Illinois volleyball power Lake Land Community College. HCC followed that up with a three-game victory over Iowa Lakes 30-24, 26-30, 15-8.

HCC closed out the day with a 30-15, 30-19 win over Sioux Falls, and then downed Southwestern Iowa 30-18, 30-20.

Hutchinson (4-0) has two more pool play matches on Saturday against two national powers. HCC plays Indian Hills at 9 a.m. and Missouri State-West Plains at 12:30 p.m. HCC will play one more match at either 2 or 3:30 p.m.

All-American middle blocker Ludmila Amaral had a combined 31 kills and 13 assists in four matches on Friday.

Against Lake Land, Amaral had eight kills, two blocks and three assists. Freshman Amanda Smith had eight kills and two blocks, while freshman setter Melissa Gmur had 12 assists and three aces.

Sophomore Sarah Unruh got untracked against Iowa Lakes with 10 kills and two blocks. Gmur added nine assists and two aces.  Amaral had 10 kills and four blocks.

Amaral led HCC against Sioux Falls with seven kills and five blocks. Freshman LaToya Taylor had five kills and four blocks. Gmur added 12 assists.

In the final match, Unruh and Amaral had six kills each. Gmur had 13 assists.
