HAWTHORNE NATIONAL RUNNER-UP IN SHOT;

NESMITH, DRAKE ALSO SCORE BIG FOR HCC

By Steve Carpenter

This was Taz Hawthorne’s last shot.

In three previous NJCAA National Track and Field Championships, Hawthorne has never been happy with his performances in the shot put. That all changed on Friday at the 2009 NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in his home venue, Gowans Stadium.

Hawthorne uncorked a shot put throw of 53 feet, one-quarter inch to finish as national runner-up.

“Every national meet I’ve come to, I didn’t do good,” Hawthorne said. “Last year, I had the farthest throw in the nation and did bad at nationals. This was my last one, I had to do it.”

HENRY MAKES LAST SHOT PUT ATTEMPT COUNT,

TAKES FOURTH IN NATION

By Steve Carpenter

Friday, May 22, 2009

Central Arizona’s Kenisha Throughsingh Hutchinson Community College freshman shot putter Leeza Henry jus the right motivation on Friday at the 2009 NJCAA Outdoor National Championships at Gowans Stadium.

Henry was fourth heading into Friday’s finals. Her goal was to at least match what she placed at the 2009 indoor nationals in March. When Throughsingh surpassed Henry in the standings, the Lady Dragon freshman was psyched to re-take what was hers.

With her last attempt in the finals, Henry unleashed a toss of 43 feet, 8 inches to finish fourth, passing Throughsingh and matching her performance at the indoor nationals.
