LEVELLAND, Texas – The Hutchinson
Community College men’s track and field team saved its best
performances of the 2005 NJCAA Outdoor National Track and Field
Championships for the final day of competition at South Plains
College.
Freshmen Kyle Roberts and Drew Luty
both scored for the Blue Dragons in the 400 intermediate hurdles on
Wednesday with Roberts finishing as a national runner-up. That
performance helped the Blue Dragon men to a Top 10 finish, placing
eighth with 40 points. Central Arizona won the men’s team
championship.
Roberts, a freshman from Hutchinson
High, was third and Luty, a freshman from Inman, qualified for the 400
IM finals in third and eighth, respectively. Both Blue Dragons
improved on those marks in the finals. Roberts blew to his national
runner-up finish in a time of 52.01 seconds. Luty was sixth in 54.25
seconds.
Roberts and freshman decathlete Jamie
Alexander both leave the national championships with silver medals.
Alexander had a strong second day in the decathlon to finish second,
missing a national championship by a mere 59 points on Tuesday.
Sophomore Clint Reed won a national
bronze medal with a third-place showing in the high jump. He tied
Garvin Peters of Central Arizona and Kyle Riddle of Iowa Central for
third after clearing 6 feet, 8.25 inches.
The Blue Dragon men scored in four
events on Wednesday.
+ The 4x100 relay team of Mikey Moore,
Robert Franklin, Armond Smith and B.J. Thomas finished fifth in a time
of 43.58 seconds.
+ Franklin went 24 feet, 0.75 inches to
take fifth in the long jump.
+ Smith placed sixth in the 200 finals
with a time of 21.31 seconds.
+ Sophomore Tyler Frazier placed sixth
in the javelin with a best mark of 177 feet 11 inches.
+Sophomore Zack Patterson was ninth in
the shot put with a top heave of 48 feet, 1.75 inches.
+ Sophomore Daren Moser took ninth in
the hammer throw after a top effort of 149 feet, 8 inches.
+ Freshman Heath Westman was 11th in
the javelin going 163 feet, 8 inches.
+ Sophomore Matt Kolarik was 13th in
the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4.25 inches.
On Tuesday:
+ Alexander took second in the
Decathlon with a 10-event score of 6,163 points.
+ Sophomore Rainer Bass finished 11th
in the 3,000 steeplechase in a time of 10 minutes, 29.62 seconds.
The Hutchinson women wound up finishing
12th with 21 points.
+ Freshman Misty Reed finished 12th in
the 1,500 with a time of 5 minutes, 14:22 seconds.
+ On Tuesday, sophomores Glenda Branch
and Becky Hall finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,000
steeplechase. Branch’s time was 12:38.20. Hall’s time was 12:44.01.
The Blue Dragon women’s’ top finish of
the 2005 championships was Jessica Blackwill’s national runner-up
finish in the javelin on Monday. |
