ALEXANDER FINISHES OFF DECATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP |

Hutchinson Community College freshman
Jamie Alexander finished off an impressive decathlon performance over
the weekend in winning the Region VI championship on Friday at
Coffeyville’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.
Alexander matched his point total at
the Oklahoma Christian Invitational victory exactly, winning the
regional championship with 6,037 points. Alexander was the only one of
12 competitors to break the 6,000-point plateau. Alexander has already
qualified for the NJCAA national championships later this month in
Levelland, Texas.
Overall, the Blue Dragon track and
field teams captured four event championships.
Sophomore Clint Reed set a personal
record by clearing 6 feet, 101/2 inches to win the men’s high jump.
On the women’s side, Jessica Blackwill
took regional gold in the javelin with a top attempt of 140 feet, 3
inches. Becky Hall won the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12
minutes, 7.15 seconds.
Sophomore Glenda Branch qualified for
nationals in the steeplechase, finishing third with a time of
12:30.29.
Overall, the Blue Dragon men finished
third in the Region VI team standings with 114 points. Barton County
won the team title with 211 points. Butler was runner-up with 130
points. But the Dragon men finished as Jayhawk West runners-up, edging
Butler 171.5-164. Barton captured the Jayhawk West title with 250
points.
The Lady Dragons finished fourth in
both the regional and league standings. In Region VI scoring, HCC
scored 84 points, finishing behind Barton County (263), Butler (152)
and Cloud County (98.5). Hutch finished behind the same three times in
the in the Jayhawk West team race with 122.5 points.
The Blue Dragons will play host to a
Last Chance meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gowans Stadium.
