NORMAN, Okla. – Freshman Sky
Chapman and sophomore Chris Copeland both earned automatic bids to nationals
on Saturday at the season’s second Oklahoma Christian Invitational at the
University of Oklahoma.
Chapman qualified in the 800
meters, earning his first individual qualification. Chapman also qualified
as a member of HCC’s Distance Medley Relay. Copeland punched his ticket for
the second time in an individual event, qualifying in the 400 meters.
Copeland had earlier qualified in the 600 meters.
The Blue Dragons now have
eight qualifiers for the 2009 NJCAA Indoor National Championships, which
will be contested in the first weekend of March at Texas Tech University.
Chapman earned a
fourth-place finish in the 800 meters, posting a national qualifying time of
1 minute, 58.76 seconds.
Copeland finished third on
Saturday with a national qualifying time of 50.46 seconds.
The Blue Dragons earned two
event victories at OCU.
Hutchinson had a 1-2-3 sweep
in the shot put. Sophomore Taz Hawthorne won the shot put with a throw of 45
feet, 10 inches. Freshman Jon Binning was second at 45-1 and freshman Joel
Krause was third at 44 feet.
Sophomore Eron Phillips
remained perfect in the long jump, winning for the fourth consecutive meet
with a leap of 24-1.75. He also finished third in the high jump, clearing
6-4.
Freshman hurdler Derrick
Krautlarger was the only other Blue Dragon to claim a top-three finish. He
finished second in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a season’s-best time
of 8.49 seconds.
The Blue Dragons will
compete at the Region VI championships. The combined-event competition will
be Friday at Highland Community College and Saturday at Johnson County
Community College. The remainder of the meet will be on Sunday at Ahearn
Fieldhouse at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
