HCC Sports Information

Saturday, February 14, 2009

NORMAN, Okla. – Freshman Sky Chapman and sophomore Chris Copeland both earned automatic bids to nationals on Saturday at the season’s second Oklahoma Christian Invitational at the University of Oklahoma.

Chapman qualified in the 800 meters, earning his first individual qualification. Chapman also qualified as a member of HCC’s Distance Medley Relay. Copeland punched his ticket for the second time in an individual event, qualifying in the 400 meters. Copeland had earlier qualified in the 600 meters.

The Blue Dragons now have eight qualifiers for the 2009 NJCAA Indoor National Championships, which will be contested in the first weekend of March at Texas Tech University.

Chapman earned a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters, posting a national qualifying time of 1 minute, 58.76 seconds.

Copeland finished third on Saturday with a national qualifying time of 50.46 seconds.

The Blue Dragons earned two event victories at OCU.

Hutchinson had a 1-2-3 sweep in the shot put. Sophomore Taz Hawthorne won the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 10 inches. Freshman Jon Binning was second at 45-1 and freshman Joel Krause was third at 44 feet.

Sophomore Eron Phillips remained perfect in the long jump, winning for the fourth consecutive meet with a leap of 24-1.75. He also finished third in the high jump, clearing 6-4.

Freshman hurdler Derrick Krautlarger was the only other Blue Dragon to claim a top-three finish. He finished second in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing with a season’s-best time of 8.49 seconds.

The Blue Dragons will compete at the Region VI championships. The combined-event competition will be Friday at Highland Community College and Saturday at Johnson County Community College. The remainder of the meet will be on Sunday at Ahearn Fieldhouse at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
