HCC Sports Information

Friday, January 30, 2009

OVERLAND PARK – Sophomore middle distance runner Chris Copeland became the sixth Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field national indoor qualifier on Friday night at the Johnson County Cavalier Night Relays.

Copeland won the 600 meters with an NJCAA Indoor National Championship qualifying time of 1 minute, 23.22 seconds. Copeland qualifies for the indoor national championships for the second-straight season.

Copeland joins Eron Phillips (long jump, high jump), Ben Kruse (pole vault), Taz Hawthorne (shot put) and the HCC distance medley relay as national indoor qualifiers.

Hutchinson dominated the three-team meet (Johnson County and Cowley College were the other competing teams), winning 13 of 15 events. The Blue Dragons had 16 top-three finishes and swept the top three places in five events.

The Blue Dragons had two double-event winners on Friday night.

Hawthorne captured both throws events. The 2008 indoor All-American won the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 6.5 inches; and then won the weight throw at 44-4.

Phillips tied for first with Cowley’s Ray Quill in the high jump. Both went 6-6. Phillips won his third-straight long jump event with a leap of 23-6.
