NORMAN, Okla. – Freshman
Cali Shamburg became the second Hutchinson Community College women’s track
and field team member to qualify for the 2009 NJCAA Indoor National
Championships on Saturday.
Shamburg reached the
national qualifying standard in the pole vault at the first of two Oklahoma
Christian University Invitationals at the University of Oklahoma. Shamburg
finished fifth clearing 9 feet, 8 inches.
She joins thrower Leeza
Henry as HCC qualifiers for the indoor national championships in early
March.
The Lady Dragons once again
fared very well in the field events at OCU.
Henry had a pair of
fifth-place finishes in the shot put and weight throw. Henry went 40-8.75 in
the shot put, bettering her national qualifying mark of last week by 1 foot,
8.25 inches. Henry went 43-9.25 in the weight throw.
Freshman Hannah McPherson
placed second in the long jump at 13-11. Freshman Kaitlyn Duckett was sixth
in the pole vault at 8-8.25. Shamburg finished fifth in the triple jump at
31-8.25, and right behind her was freshman Shayla Thompson in sixth at 30.7.
According to head coach Pat
Becher, one of the biggest improvements on the track from last weekend’s
season opener was sophomore Mychala Money in the 1,000 meters. She knocked
seven full seconds off her time from a week ago and finished 11th in a
stacked field with a time of 3:30.45.
Thompson had the best
individual finish on the track for HCC on Saturday. She finished fourth in
the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.97 seconds.
Sophomore Ashton Trotter
trimmed two seconds off her time in the 600 meters, finishing sixth in
1:47.02.
The Lady Dragons will
compete in the Johnson County Invitational on Friday.
One other scheduling note,
the Lady Dragons will not compete in the Scott Nisly Invitational at Doane
College in Crete, Neb., on Feb. 6-7.
