NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomores
Eron Phillips and Taz Hawthorn continue to set an early, strong pace for the
Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team early in the 2009
indoor season.
Both have already qualified
for the NJCAA Indoor national championships, but both improved on their
opening weekend marks on Saturday at the Oklahoma Christian Invitational at
the University of Oklahoma.
Phillips went a career-best
6-feet, 8.75 inches in the high jump. Phillips then won the long jump with a
jump of 23-7.
Hawthorne was HCC’s only
other event winner on Saturday, winning the shot put with a top effort of
51-11.75. For the second-straight week, the Blue Dragons were 1-2 in the
shot put. John Binning was second at 50-0.5.
The Blue Dragons, which had
five national qualifiers one week ago, didn’t get any new qualifiers on
Saturday.
Sophomore Ben Kruse placed
third in the pole vault at 14-3.25. Freshman Michael Bethea had a pair of
top five finishes, taking fourth in the triple jump (42-9) and fifth in the
long jump (20-11.75). Sophomore Joel Krause took fourth in the weight throw
(41-7).
HCC had 13 Top-6 finishes in
the field events.
Sprinter Devery Bell had a
solid Blue Dragon debut. Bell finished second in the 60 meters with a time
of 7.10 seconds. He qualified third for the finals in 7.22 seconds.
HCC had a good showing in
the 60 meters. Freshman Jared Nesmith was sixth in the 60 finals in 7.45
seconds. He qualified second for the finals in 7.18 seconds.
Freshman Derrick Krautlarger
took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds. Krautlarger
was the top qualifiers out of the preliminaries in 8.53 seconds.
Sophomore Wade Adams took
second in the mile run with a time of 4:35.27. Adams with also sixth in the
1,000 meters in 2:47.19.
Freshman Jim Hatcher was
fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:17.48.
The Blue Dragons will
compete in the Johnson County Invitational on Friday.
One other scheduling note,
the Blue Dragons will not compete in the Scott Nisly Invitational at Doane
College in Crete, Neb., on Feb. 6-7.
