The Hutchinson Community College track and
field team will play host to its third major competition since the
completion of the Gowans Stadium renovation on Saturday night with the 2008
Hutchinson Night Relays.
The second running of the renewal of the
Night Relays begins at Gowans at 1 p.m.
Eight teams are scheduled to compete in the
2008 Night Relays. In addition to Hutchinson will be Barton County, Butler,
Cloud County, Colby, Garden City, Bethany College and Kansas Wesleyan.
There will be two events off site from
Gowans. The men's and women's hammer will be at the Kansas State Fairgrounds
on Severance, next to the Fairgrounds Water Park.
The hammer begins at noon. Then at 1:30
p.m. the men's and women's javelin will begin at Hutchinson High School's
Don Michael Field on Severance, just south of 17th.
The Hutch Night Relays were revived last
season after the renovation of Gowans Stadium was completed. The relays were
halted in 1991. Before the stoppage of the Night Relays, the event had run
consecutively for 46 years, making it one of the longest running track
events in the nation to that point.
The Blue Dragon men come off a 13th-place
NJCAA Indoor Championships performance and have defending national 200-meter
champion Teddy Poole competing on Saturday. Also indoor All-American weight
person Gavin Wuthrich, high jumper Dustin Jones and middle-distance runner
A.J. Isham with compete.
The HCC women are led by a strong middle
distance group and weight person Elaya Foster.
