MANHATTAN – One Hutchinson Community College women’s relay and one individual
punched their tickets for indoor nationals on Sunday at the 2008 Region VI
championships at Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan.
Sophomore Amanda Young and the women’s
4x800-meter relay earned trips for the 2008 NJCAA Indoor National
Championships next month in Charleston, Ill.
Young cleared 5 feet, 1 inch in the women’s
pentathlon to reach the automatic qualifying mark. It was the first time
this season that Young has cleared 5 feet. Young is the second individual to
qualify for nationals.
Later in the day, HCC’s 4x800 relay team of
Amber Kerschen, Natalie Marshall, Andrea Schurman and Kayla Delzer qualified
for nationals in a fourth-place time of 15 minutes, 25.64 seconds.
Hutchinson placed sixth in the 13-team field
with 46.5 points. Butler won the team title with 216 points.
The Lady Dragons now have six qualifiers in
three events for nationals, which will be March 6-8.
In other Lady Dragon performances:
l Delzer
posted a season- and personal-best performance in the 1-mile run with a time
of 5:40.08, which was fourth at regionals.
l
Schurman placed fourth in the 1,000 meters in 3:24.07.
l
National qualifier Elaya Foster placed fourth in the weight throw with a
time distance of 42-11.75. Chelsey Dreiling was sixth with a personal best
of 42-0.75.
l The HCC
4x400-meter relay team placed third in regionals at 4:17.93, the team’s
second-best time this season.
l HCC’s
distance-medley relay team placed fourth in 15:25.64.
l Kershen
ran a team-best time in the 800 meters of 2:37.37, but finished 11th.
l
Sophomore Kristen Torres had the best performance by a Lady Dragon in the
3,000 meters with an 11th-place time of 13:11.04.
The Lady Dragons will compete in a
last-chance meet on Friday at Cowley College in Arkansas City.
