PITTSBURG
– Johnnie and Teddy Poole led the way for the Hutchinson Community College
men’s indoor track and field on Friday at the Pitt State Invitational at
Pittsburg State University.
Freshman Johnnie Poole claimed individual titles in the 200 meters and the
long jump. His cousin and defending 200 meter national champion Teddy Poole
claimed the 400-meter title. The Blue Dragons had four event championships –
sophomore Chase Thompson won the mile run – and 10 top-three finishes.
Because of the small confines of the Pittsburg State track, overall times
weren’t as good as HCC’s first two meets and subsequently didn’t have any
national qualifiers.
Johnnie Poole ran the second-best 200-meter time by the Blue Dragons this
season, winning the Pitt State 200 with a time of 23.07 seconds. Right
behind Poole was freshman Markish Jones, who ran the fourth-best HCC time of
the season in the 200 with a second-place time of 23.15. Freshmen Alex
Whitney (23.59) and Melton Diggs (23.66) were fifth and sixth, respectively,
in the 200.
Johnnie Poole had his best long jump of the season with a winning leap of 22
feet, 5 inches, which came on the first attempts in the finals. Jones, who
has already earned a national qualification in the long jump, was fourth
with a lead of 21-10.75. Freshman Jake Rourke was fifth at 21-4.25.
Running the 400 meters for the first time this season, All-American Teddy
Poole won with a time of 51.75 seconds, the second-best time for HCC this
season.
Thompson had a strong meet, winning the mile run and finishing third in the
800 meters. Thompson ran a season-best mile time of 4:40.22, winning by more
than three seconds. Freshman Wade Adams was third in the mile in 4:49.58.
Thompson then posted the best Blue Dragon time in 2008 in the indoor 800
with a third-place time of 2:04.75. Sophomore Chris Powell was fifth in
2:09.42.
The
HCC 4x400 relay was second in a time of 3:32.28.
Freshman Steven Fisher tied for second in the pole vault with a height of
13-5.75, the best for a Blue Dragon vaulter in 2008.
Freshman Taz Hawthorn, who is ranked among the top junior college shot put
efforts this season, was third with a time effort of 51-7.25, his best
attempt of 2008.
The Blue Dragons will next compete at the 2008 Oklahoma Christian
Invitational at the University of Oklahoma next Saturday in Norman, Okla.
