LAWRENCE – Hutchinson Community College All-America sprinter Teddy Poole out-ran
some of the best from the University of Kansas, Wichita State University and
other area schools, winning both the 60- and 200-meter sprints at the
Jayhawk Indoor Track and Field Classic on Friday at the KU’s Anschutz
Pavilion.
Qualifying for the finals with the test time
of the day, Poole blitzed the 60-meter field with a time of 6.80 seconds.
Poole, who has already qualified for the NJCAA Indoor National
Championships, qualified with a time of 6.86 seconds.
He then ran a 21.70 to win the 200 meters.
Poole’s performances highlighted a very
strong meet for the Blue Dragon men’s and women’s track teams on Friday.
Freshman sprinter Markish Jones qualified for
nationals in the 60 meters with a fifth-place time of 6.93 seconds. Jones,
who is already qualified for nationals in the long jump, qualified for the
60 finals with the fifth-best time of 6.99 seconds.
Sophomore Gavin Wuthrich set a new school
record and qualified for nationals in the weight throw. Wuthrich had a
fourth-place effort of 52 feet, 7 1/2 inches.
Also qualifying for nationals was sophomore
A.J. Isham, who finished third in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:14.14.
Freshman Taz Hawthorne qualified for
nationals with a third-place showing in the shot put. Hawthorne had a top
effort of 51-5.5. Hawthorne led the competition until his final throw.
Freshman Eron Phillips finished fourth in the
long jump with a leap of 22-8, but was not a qualifying mark.
Both of HCC’s distance medley relays placed
fourth at the Jayhawk Classic.
The men’s distance medley relay team of Chase
Thompson, Johnnie Poole, Taje Livingston and Justin Riggs finished fourth in
a time of 10:59.76.
The women’s distance medley relay team of
Amber Kerschen, Kristi Oak, Natalie Marshall and Kayla Dezler also finished
fourth in a time of 14:09.69.
Individually, sophomore Lauren Kelly finished
sixth in the long jump with a leap of 15-11.
The Blue Dragons will travel to the Pittsburg
State Invitational next Friday.
