HIGHLAND – The Hutchinson Community College
men’s indoor track and field team netted three national qualifiers on
Saturday in its first competition of the season, the Highland Classic.
Sprinter Teddy Poole, high jumper Dustin
Jones and long jumper Markish Jones all reached automatic qualifying marks
for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and helped the Blue
Dragons to a dominant showing at Highland. HCC won eight events and had 27
top-three finishes.
No official team scoring was kept, but under
regular scoring guidelines, the Blue Dragons would have accumulated 277
points, more points than Benedictine, Neosho County, Highland and Colby
combined.
Poole, the reigning indoor and outdoor
national 200-meter champion, qualified for nationals this season by easily
winning the 55 meters with a time of 6.36 seconds. Pool also ran a leg of
the wining 4x400-meter relay that won with a time of 3 minutes, 35.72
seconds.
Markish Jones had a very strong first meet
for the Blue Dragons. He qualified for nationals by winning the long jump
with a mark of 23-0.75. He was third in the 55 meters with a time of 6.52
seconds and ran a leg on the 4x400 relay.
Dustin Jones was second in the high jump, but
reached the national qualifying mark, clearing 6-6.
Elsewhere for HCC, sophomore Carlton Whitney
and freshman Johnnie Poole were 1-2, respectively, in the 300 meters.
Whitney won with a time of 37.79 seconds. Poole was second in 37.99.
Sophomore A.J. Isham captured the 600 meters
in 1:26.03. Chad Fraser was third in the 600 in 1:29.24.
The Dragons captured the top three spots in
the mile run. Sophomore Justin Riggs won with a time of 4:43.76. Sophomore
Chase Thompson was second in 4:45.30 and sophomore Nick Robinson was third
in 4:53.69. Thompson also placed second in the 1,000 meters in 2:42.66.
Riggs was third in 2:42.86.
Kevin Strawn and Wade Adams were first and
second, respectively in the 3,000 meters. Strawn won with a time of 9:12.17.
Adams was second in 9:12.25.
HCC pole vaulters tied for first. Freshmen
Steven Fisher and Ben Kruse tied after clearing 13-0.25.
Hutchinson hurdlers Melton Diggs and Jordan
Teeter placed second and third, respectively in the 55-meter hurdles. Diggs
was second in 8.80 seconds. Teeter was third in 8.92 seconds.
Freshman Eron Phillips was second in the long
jump after going 21-11. Phillips was third in the high jump (6-2.25) and
scored in the triple jump (fourth place).
Freshman weightman Taz Hawthorne placed
second in the shot put after a top effort of 47-2.25
Freshman Taje Livingston ran a time of
2:42.66 in the 800 meters, which was good for third place.
Jake Rourke had a third-place showing in the
triple jump after a top effort of 44.0.75.
The Blue Dragons will compete at the Jayhawk
Classic on Friday at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
