SALINA – Hutchinson Community College
men’s tennis players dropped only one set as the Blue Dragons rolled
to a 9-0 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University on Monday.
The Blue Dragons snapped a two-dual
losing streak and won for the first time since sweeping Hesston
College 9-0 on March 28.
Sophomore Kevin Montisano (5-3) won
for the third time in his last four matches defeating Jose Suarez
6-3, 6-4. Freshman Derek Ohl evened his season record at 4-4 with an
8-3 pro-set victory over Jeff Barron.
No. 1 singles player Mark Barlett
snapped a two-match skid with a bizarre match against Kansas
Wesleyan’s Brad Vanover. Barlett dominated the first set 6-0, but
dropped the second 0-6. Barlett (3-5) recovered to win the super
tie-break 10-6.
HCC’s No. 3 singles player, Russell
Fluty (3-5) dominated his match with Andrew Frisbie, winning 6-0,
6-0.
Brandon Dixon (3-5) defeated Andy
Brockman at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1 and Casey Eveleigh (4-4)
outlasted Jeff Barron at No. 6 singles 8-6. Barron played pro-set
matches at both Nos. 5 and 6 singles for the Coyotes.
Barlett and Dixon evened their
doubles record at 4-4 with a tough 9-7 victory over Vanover and
Brockman at No. 1 doubles.
Fluty and Montisano, playing as a
doubles team for only the second time this season, easily defeated
Suarez and Frisbie 8-1. There was no match at No. 3 doubles.
The Blue Dragons next play at Newman
University on April 17.
