TABOR SWEEPS BLUE DRAGON TENNIS TEAMS

HCC Sports Information

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Ashley Kirkpatrick scored the biggest individual victory of the day for the Hutchinson Community College women’s and men’s tennis teams on Wednesday against Tabor College, but the Bluejays came away with team victories at the HCC Courts.

Kirkpatrick rallied in a super-tie break to Erica Scofield at No 4. singles. After Jessica Armstrong and Brooke Turner followed suit at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to tie the match at 3-all, Tabor captured all three doubles matches to defeat Hutchinson 6-3.

Tabor’s men defeated Hutchinson 8-1, sweeping all six singles matches. The only victory for the Blue Dragon men came at No. 1 doubles where Mark Barlett and Brandon Dixon defeated Emerson Kochen and Jason Reising 8-5.

“I wish I would have played better in the second set, but I didn’t want to lose to her, so I wasn’t going to give up,” Kirkpatrick said of her singles match. “Thank God for teammates cheering me on.”

After grabbing two service breaks to easily win the first set 6-3, Kirkpatrick lost the second set 6-2 to Scofield, a former Blue Dragon tennis player. In the super-tie break, neither player could get more than a one-point lead until 7-all when Kirkpatrick won the final three points to take the match that lasted right at 90 minutes.

“It felt good to know that you won after all of that playing,” Kirkpatrick said. “I was just trying my best. It feels pretty good.”

Armstrong defeated Tabor’s Tiffany Bloemhof 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Turner downed Tabor’s Stephanie Welz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to tie the match at 3-all.

Tabor took all three doubles matches with HCC losing two heartbreakers.

Kirkpatrick and Karen Seirer led their No. 2 doubles match 6-5 and dropped the final three games to fall 8-6. Turner and Armstrong lost 9-7 in a tie-break at No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Dragons are 2-4 heading into Thursday’s dual at Central Christian College in McPherson.

The Hutchinson men (2-4) didn’t have a good day against the Bluejays. HCC won just two sets in singles matches played at the Hutchinson city courts at the Fairgrounds.

Mark Barlett won the first set of his No. 1 singles match against Tabor’s Emerson Kochen 6-1, but dropped the second 6-1 before losing a tough super-tie break 10-8.

Kevin Montisano rallied from one set down to defeat Scott Adrian 6-2 in the second set at No. 5 singles. Adrian dominated the super-tie break 10-1.

In the No. 1 singles match, Barlett and Dixon rallied from an early service break to defeat Adrian and Reising 8-5 for HCC’s only point of the dual.

The HCC men also travel to Central Christian College on Thursday.
