Playing its first
league games out of conference since mid-March, the Hutchinson
Community College softball team dropped a pair of old league rival
Garden City on Tuesday at Fun Valley on sophomore recognition day.
Garden City got
dominant pitching performances from Tracey Cange and Alexa Harvey in
run-rule wins of 14-3 and 14-1 over the Lady Dragons.
Despite the losses,
the Lady Dragons found out during the second game that they will be
playing host to a first-round Region VI series this weekend at Fun
Valley.
Garden City (26-12)
outscored HCC 28-4 and out-hit the Lady Dragons (19-27) 27-9.
A bright spot for
the Lady Dragons was sophomore Jessica Glenn, who was a combined 4
for 6 with a double, home run and four RBIs.
Between
games, the eight sophomores were honored. Those sophomores are:
Kelli Dennis, Brianna Elman, Ashley Cushinberry, Jessica Glenn,
Dusty Smith, Chelsey Hargett, Courtney Johnson and Kelli Walker.
Game 1 Recap
(Garden City 14, HCC 3) -
BOXSCORE
Garden City broke
the first game open with an eight-run third inning. The Broncbusters
added five more runs in the fourth inning.
HCC pitchers Haley
Fowler (2-7) and Danielle Driscoll combined to walk seven and hit
two batters in addition to 14 hits. All 14 runs were earned runs.
With the Lady
Dragons trailing 9-0 after 2 1/2 innings, Glenn hit her third home
run of the season to right-center field, a two-run shot, to get HCC
on the board. Glenn also had an RBI single in the fifth that scored
Ashley Cushinberry.
Glenn was 3 for 3
and Cushinberry was 2 for 3 to account for all of Hutchinson’s hits
off Cange in the opener.
Cange struck out
four and walked two in a five-inning complete-game performance.
Game 2 Recap
(Garden City 14, HCC 1)
-
BOXSCORE
The Lady Dragons led
1-0 after two innings, but the Buster offense once again exploded in
the late innings with four runs in the fourth and eight in the sixth
to win the nightcap.
Freshman Lindsay
Doyle, who was starting in her eighth consecutive game at second
base, got her first RBI as a Lady Dragon with a sacrifice fly to
left field that scored Chelsey Hargett to give Hutchinson a 1-0
lead.
Garden City quickly
responded when Harvey helped her own cause with a two-run home run
in the top of the third to give Garden City a 2-1 lead.
That was just the
start of a huge game for Harvey, who was the winning pitcher. At the
plate, Harvey went 3 for 4 with five RBIs. In the circle, she had a
complete-game six-inning victory, allowing four hits and one earned
run.
Cushinberry, Glenn,
Hargett and Brooke Hollis all had hits in Game 2.
The Lady Dragons
will learn early Thursday who will be their first-round Region VI
opponent.
