LADY DRAGONS OPEN JAYHAWK WEST PLAY

WITH GARDEN CITY SPLIT

HCC Sports Information

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Freshman pitcher Kelli Walker earned her third victory of the season and freshman Dusty Smith delivered a key two-out, two-run single in a three-run sixth inning to lead the Hutchinson Community College softball team to a 4-1 victory over Garden City in the first half of a Jayhawk West doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Fun Valley.

Garden City managed a split of the twin bill with Hutchinson, taking the nightcap 5-4. HCC had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with one out and couldn’t push the tying run across.

The Lady Dragons (5-2, 1-1 Jayhawk West) will play at the Cloud County Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Concordia.

Game 1 Recap

Walker (3-0) pitched the final two innings in relief of starters Courtney Johnson, who received a no-decision after five innings of work.

The only blemish on Walker’s two innings was a bases-empty, two-out error in the seventh inning. She had four groundouts, one pop-up and one flyout in her two innings of work. Walker earned the victory in the circle on the power for a 3-run sixth inning, which broke open a 1-1 tie.

After sophomore Nicole Bauer doubled to lead off the inning, sophomore Megan Hudson drove in pinch-runner Ashley Cushinberry with a double of her own for a 2-1 HCC lead. Then with the bases loaded a two out, Smith roped a two-run single to plate Shea Scanlon and pinch-runner Dani Torres for a 4-1 HCC lead.

Smith led a nine-point Lady Dragon attack, going 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs in Game 1. Hudson also went 2 for 3.

The Lady Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on sophomore Jenn Tanno’s RBI single which scored leadoff hitter Jessica Glenn.

Garden City tied the game in the second off Johnson when Kayla Jeanjaquet scored on a wild pitch.

Johnson allowed six hits, three walks and only one earned run in five innings of work. Johnson had one strikeout.

Garden City stranded nine runners on base. HCC left eight on base.

Game 2 Recap

Glenn went 4 for 4 to lead HCC’s 11-hit attack in the nightcap. But the Lady Dragons couldn’t product enough two-out hits to straight eight more runners on base in a 5-4 loss.

The Lady Dragons kept batting back in Game 2. Down 4-1 after Garden City’s half of the fifth, HCC pulled within one after Nicole Bauer’s two-run home run. Then after the Broncbusters scored a single run in the top of the sixth, Hudson hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to pull the Lady Dragons within 5-4 entering the seventh.

Hutch loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh against Garden City pitcher Joni Stegman, but Glenn was cut down at home on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher. Hudson then hit into another fielder’s choice to end the game.

Bauer and Hudson went 2 for 4 each. Hudson scored two runs and drove in one with her second homer of the season.

HCC starting pitcher Kourtney Klein (1-2) took the loss, but Garden City figured out Walker in Game 2. Walker allowed eight hits and three runs in 2 2-3 innings. Klein struck out two and gave up four hits and two earned runs in three innings.

Garden City had 14 hits, including three hits from leadoff hitter Megan Hamilton and Rebecca Diehl, who drove in three RBIs.
