The Hutchinson Community College
women’s softball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2008
Jayhawk Conference Western Division season, the league announced on
Tuesday.
Of the three Division II teams in
the Jayhawk West – Pratt and Dodge City are the other two teams –
Hutchinson is the second-highest team in the 2008 poll.
Butler Community College is the
league coaches’ choice to win the 2008 Jayhawk West title. Seward
County is picked second and Garden City is picked third. All three
of those teams are Division I programs. Pratt is the highest-ranked
Division II team in the Jayhawk West, picked to finish fourth.
Head coach Jaime Rose (87-67) begins
her fourth season at Hutchinson. She has 10 players back from a team
that caught fire late, finishing third in the Division II Region VI
Tournament. The Lady Dragons were 29-26 overall.
Middle infielder Jenn Tanno is the
top returning hitters (.349, 6 HR; 42 RBIs). Jenna Schroeder is the
other returning .300-plus hitter (.310, 30 RBIs).
In the pitching circle, Kourtney
Klein returns as the top returning arm on the Lady Dragon staff.
Klein, who didn’t start pitching until about a third of the way
through the 2007 season, finished with a 7-7 record with a 3.56 ERA
and 55 strikeouts in 111 innings pitched.
Freshman Kelli Walker is expected to
add depth to the HCC pitching staff this season.
The Lady Dragons open the 2008
season on Feb. 21 at Northern Oklahoma in Tonkawa. HCC will play its
home opener on Feb. 28 against Labette at Fun Valley.
