GLADSTONE, Mo. – The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team earlier on Tuesday got a sniff of a national ranking, but then allowed its first goal of the season and the first blemish on its record.

Maple Woods Community College scored with just 11 minutes remaining and Hutchinson had to hold on through two 10-minute overtime for a 1-1 tie. Last season, HCC defeated Maple Woods 6-0 in the 2008 season opener.

Hutchinson’s team record shutout streaks of six games and 580 minutes came to an end.

This was the Lady Dragons’ fourth overtime game in program history. HCC is now 0-2-2 in overtime games.

Earlier on Tuesday, the NJCAA Division I women’s soccer rankings were released and Hutchinson was among the teams listed as receiving votes. It was the first national notoriety the team has gotten this season as HCC has outscored opponents now 77-1.

“We dominated the first half, and we didn’t put the game away.” head coach Sammy Lane said. “When you are playing the good teams, you have to score when you are on top. We spent a lot of time getting that knock-out goal, but obviously it never happened.”

Hutchinson (6-0-1) dominated the first half , but only scored once on sophomore Chelsea Myers’ unassisted goal in the 35th minute. It was Myers’ seventh goal of the season and 21st goal of her career, which is third on the career goals list.

Maple Woods (6-0-1) came on strong on the second half and finally broke through against the Lady Dragons when Amanda Broderick scored on cross from Mallory Craig in the 76th minute.

Maple Woods would have struck again in the 79th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Mandy Stapleton (3-0-1) made a phenomenal full-extension save, one of her three saves in the game.

“As much as (Maple Woods) looked like they were out of gas, they were stronger in the second half,” Lane said. “Their fullbacks were all fast, all strong and very much committed to not giving up goals.”

Hutchinson had 15 shots, four on goal. Maple Woods had 12 shots, a season high against Hutchinson this season, and three shots on goal.

The Lady Dragons return to Jayhawk Conference action on Friday when they travel to Cowley College for a 4 p.m. match in Arkansas City. The Lady Dragons defeated Cowley 11-0 in the season opener on Aug. 28 in Hutchinson.
