INDEPENDENCE – Four
different players scored hat tricks, yet another first in a season filled
with broken records as the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team
smashed Independence 18-0 in a Jayhawk Conference battle on Sunday
afternoon.
Freshman Caitlyn Coney tied
a single-game record with five goals, tying teammate Stephanie Franz, who
scored four of her own against the Pirates. Freshmen Nicole Randall and
Veronica Guzman had three goals each. HCC players have 11 hat tricks in its
first six games.
The Lady Dragons (6-0, 4-0
Jayhawk Conference) also established the following new team records:
l
Largest margin of victory (18).
l
Total shots (62).
l
Shots on goal (38).
l
Team Assists (13).
l
Team points in a game (51).
“We did what we were
expected to do.” head coach Sammy Lane said.
Coney tied the single-game
record for goals on a school-record 11 shots on goal. Coney now has 12 goals
for the season.
All five of Coney’s goals
came in the second half, a new record for goals in a half, breaking Jenny
Yukich’s record of four in a half. Coney recorded 10 points, one point
behind Franz, who holds the record with 11 points in a game on Friday
against Northern Oklahoma.
Franz scored 10 points
adding a season-high two assists to her goal total. She now has 40 total
points for the season which is third most in a season for a freshman. She
has a team-high 18 goals this season and she is three goals short of tying
Yukich for the single-season record for goals of 21.
Sophomore Chelsea Myers
moved to second place for career points in a career with 65. She had seven
points against Independence (three assists and two goals).
Randall had eight points
(three goals and two assists). Guzman had six points in the game, scoring
the first three goals of the game.
The Lady Dragons scored six
goals in the first half. They picked it up by scoring a team-record 12 goals
in the second half. Six players scored in the game. Guzman, Randall, Franz,
Myers, Coney and freshman Amelia Anderson tallied her first goal of the
season.
“Our finishing was very poor
today (in the first half).” Lane said. “We attacked the goal and our
finishing improved in the second half.
“I stress to the girls that
you have to finish goals now so that when you need to make a goal in a close
game you can execute.” Lane said. “Sometimes the girls don’t realize the
importance of executing one v. one opportunities against the goalkeeper.”
Independence goalkeeper
Courtney Burns had the most saves ever against Hutchinson with 21.
Sophomore Michelle McElroy
got the start and recorded her 17th career win, which ties the record for
most wins in a career for a goalkeeper with Carly McArthur and Ashley Perez.
Freshman Mandy Stapleton played the second half and was the only HCC keeper
to make a save. Independence only mustered one shot.
HCC will play Maple Woods at
3 p.m. on Tuesday in Kansas City.
