The Hutchinson Community
College women’s soccer team had another record-setting day against Northern
Oklahoma on Friday at the USD 308 Athletic Complex.
The Lady Dragons scored a
team-record nine goals in the first half and tied the school mark for goals
in a game in a 14-0 victory over the Mavericks.
Hutchinson (5-0) posted its
record fifth consecutive shutout to start the season and established a new
mark for consecutive scoreless minutes at 457 minutes, 45 seconds, which
dates back to last year’s regional semifinal.
Freshman Stephanie Franz
had another memorable game. She tied her own team single-game record for
goals with five and set a new team individual record for most points in a
game with 11 points. Franz also had an assist. Franz also tied the No. 1
spot for individual goals in a half, by recording four in the first half.
She now has a team-high 14 goals for the season.
“I love to score, but like
I said, assists always feel good,” Franz said. “I strive every game to do my
best.”
“Franz has an unbelievable
work rate when she doesn’t have the ball.” head coach Sammy Lane said. “She
will kick and hurry and fight a defender to get the ball. To get the ball,
to get open, to get a shot, if she loses it she will bust her butt to get
back and win it again.”
Freshman Nicole Randall was
another Lady Dragon who put up good numbers. Her four assists tied for the
second-most in a game. Three of those assists came in the second half, which
tied for second in assists in a half. Randall has six assists for the
season, one behind sophomore Chelsea Myers for the team lead.
Myers’ one assist on Friday
moved her into sole possession first on the career assists list with 22,
breaking the tie with Johanna Adolfs (2006-07). Myers’ record-setting assist
came on a pretty pass to sophomore Leilah Saadi. It was the fifth time these
two have assisted each other in the last three games.
Freshman Caitlyn Coney
notched her second hat trick of the season. The other came last Saturday
against Allen County. She now has seven goals for the season.
“We all
came out here focused.” Coney said. “All of our heads were in the game.”
Freshman Finola Corley set
yet another school record for goals scored in consecutive games with her
first-career multi-goal game on Friday. Corley has scored in five-straight
games and has six goals for the season.
Corley and four other
players had goals in the first half. Franz had four, Coney three and Saadi
had one which gives her nine on the season. Freshman Veronica Guzman added
the last goal, it was her third of the year.
Goal
scorers in the second half included: Corley, Coney and Franz. Freshman
Ashley Leihsing and sophomore Amy Phipps also added single goals, both their
second strikes of the year.
Freshman
goalkeeper Mandy Stapleton (3-0) started and saved one shot. Sophomore
Michelle McElroy played the second half and had one save as well, as the
Lady Dragons continue to play stifling defense.
HCC will play Independence
at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Independence.

On
Stephanie Franz …
“I think
she is enjoying the freedom of playing one v. one. She can express herself
more. Hopefully she will just continue to look to score goals. You can’t
score enough goals as a forward, you can’t practice it enough.”
