The Hutchinson Community
College women’s soccer team blanked Garden City 6-0 in a Jayhawk Conference
battle on Monday afternoon at the USD 308 Athletic Complex.
The shutout was HCC’s
fourth straight to start the season. Hutch is now 10-0 all time against
Garden City, the most wins versus any opponent in team history.
Sophomore Leilah Saadi led
the way for the Lady Dragons (4-0, 3-0 Jayhawk Conference) with her second
consecutive hat trick, the first time in program history for a player to
reach that milestone. It was the HCC forward’s fourth-career hat trick and
it gives her 19 career goals. She jumps two spots to third on the career
list. Saadi has now recorded 14 points in her last two games (six goals, two
assists).
“It’s good to be scoring,”
said Saadi, who has eight goals this season. “Last year I had a rough time
scoring. I feel like my hard work is paying off.”
Freshman Finola Corley
contributed to another stellar defensive effort and scored her fourth goal
of the season. She now has a goal in each of the first four games, which is
a consecutive-goals record for a defensive player and it’s the fourth time
in program history a player has scored in four-straight games.
“As a defender, that’s what
I do, but I love to push forward,” Corley said. “It’s one of my strengths
and it seems to be working.”
HCC found the back of the
net in the 8th minute on Saadi’s first goal of the game. It came on a pass
from sophomore Chelsea Myers, who tied the HCC career record for assists
with 21.
“The key for this team is
that if we get up early, our energy level goes up and we can really attack
teams.” head coach Sammy Lane said.
Saadi’ second goal was
scored on a rebound in the 29th minute and freshman Stephanie Franz scored
the final goal of the first half on a Saadi assist in the 38th minute.
In the first half alone,
Garden City (1-2, 1-2) goalkeeper Brooke Feikert had 12 saves. She recorded
18 for the game, the second most saves ever against HCC in a single match.
Feikert led a pesky Garden City defense that sometimes played eight people
behind the ball and racked up 14 fouls and two yellow cards.
Myers’ penalty kick in the
52nd minute came as a result of one of those aggressive fouls. That score
gave her four-straight multi-point games for the season and 14 in her
career. It was the Lady Dragons’ second penalty kick goal of the season.
Saadi converted on the other against Cowley on Aug. 28.
Saadi scored her third goal
in the 64th minute from a Corley feed. Corley’s unassisted goal was the
final score in the 80th minute.
Hutchinson, for the
second-straight game, broke the school record for shots attempted with 53,
three shots hit the post or cross bar.
Michelle McElroy got the
start and earned her 16th career victory in goal. She is now one away from
tying the career record for wins. Mandy Stapleton played the second half as
HCC continues to split time at the goal keeper position.
The Lady Dragons will play
host to Northern Oklahoma at 3 p.m. on Friday at the USD 308 Athletic
Complex.

Head Coach Sammy Lane
On Garden City playing
eight behind the ball …
“Once you get ahead and
force them to come out a little bit. His game plan was to try to keep it 0-0
and score on a counter attack. The key for this team is that if we get up
early, our energy level goes up and we can really attack teams.”
On his team’s overall
effort against Garden City …
“We attacked Allen County
with pace on Saturday. I felt like we didn’t attack with any pace today. We
created no one-v-one’s today. I felt like we were 60 percent. I was
disappointed with the speed in which we tried to play today.
Sophomore Leilah Saadi
On Garden City playing
eight behind the ball …
“We you have that many
players behind (the ball), you have to work together even more and we have
to get our passes on and get our shots have to be right. It does make it
more difficult, but it’s better for us because we need to be put in that
situation so when we are in regionals, we know how to play like that.”
On getting 53 shots off
in the game …
“It should have been more
(goals scores). Six was OK. We hit the crossbar a lot. With more practice,
we will get them into the goal.”
