CHANUTE – After an 11-day break, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team opened up Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday night with a 4-0 victory at Neosho County.

Sophomore Chelsea Myers scored two goals to lead the Lady Dragons. Freshmen Finola Corley and Nicole Randall also scored as HCC (2-0, 1-0 Jayhawk Conference) earned its second-straight shutout of the season and a fifth-straight victory over the Panthers (3-2, 1-1).

The Lady Dragons had opportunities to score in the first half, but only mustered a 2-0 lead at intermission. HCC outshot Neosho County 18-6 and 8-4 in shots on goal. The Lady Dragons had just six total shots in the first half.

“Anytime you win on the road you will take it,” HCC coach Sammy Lane said.

With her two goals, Myers moved into fourth place on the Lady Dragon career goals list with 16. She now has 50 career points, which moves her into third place on that list. Myers is second on the HCC career assists list with 18.

Myers got the game started with plenty of excitement when she scored on a breakaway goal in the fourth minute.

HCC’s offense bogged down for several minutes in the first half, but was re-ignited by a laser from Corley, who scored from 30 yards out on a free kick in the 33rd minute. The goal was Corley’s second of the season.

“Once we got the second goal it took the steam out of them,” Lane said.

Randall, got the offense started in the second half with her first career goal, on a booming shot from 30 yards out, in the 67th minute. She was assisted by Veronica Guzman on a nifty feed through the middle.

Myers the recorded her second-straight multi-point game when she scored on a perfect pass from Leilah Saadi in the 71st minute. Saadi’s assist was the 15th of her career, which ties Jenny Yukich (2006-07) for fourth place on the career assists list.

HCC sophomore goalkeeper Michelle McElroy (1-0) got the start and kept the Panthers scoreless in the first half with one save. Freshman Mandy Stapleton played the second half and stopped all three shots, a season high.

The Lady Dragons open a three-game homestand on Saturday against Allen County at 3 p.m. at the USD 308 Athletic Complex on 23rd and Cleveland.

GAME NOTES – Myers now has 12 career multi-point games (3 or more points in a game) and is second on the career list. … McElroy had her 15th career victory, moving her within three wins of the career record held by Ashley Perez (2005-06) and Carly McArthur (2006-07). … HCC posted its third-straight shutout over Neosho County and has outscored the Panthers 17-2 in its five-game winning streak over Neosho County. … HCC posted its 41st shutout in program history.
