HCC WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM

BLANKS MAPLE WOODS IN SEASON OPENER

HCC Sports Information

Monday, August 25, 2008

GREAT BEND – Six different players scored goals as the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team opened the 2008 season in strong fashion, shutting out Maple Woods College 6-0 on Saturday in the opening round of the Barton Soccer Classic at Barton Community College.

HCC (1-0) scored three goals in each half and defensively didn’t allow a shot on goal.

Four different Lady Dragons scored three points in the match. Freshmen Danielle Sandman, Alaina Hudson, Alisha Cooper and Meghan Decker all had one goal and one assists to pace a dominant Lady Dragon offensive attack.

Hudson scored HCC’s first goal of the season just 4 minutes, 24 seconds into the match from a Sandman assist. Sandman scored in the 29th minute from a Cooper assist for a 2-0 Lady Dragon lead. Then with less than 2 minutes to go before halftime, freshman Leilah Saadi scored from an Amy Phipps assist.

Freshman Vanessa Magana opened the second-half scoring with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute. Cooper made it 5-0 in the 75th minute when she deposited a corner kick from Decker into the net. Decker finished out the scoring in the 83rd minute with a goal off an assist from Hudson.

HCC goalkeepers Michelle McElroy and Bry Aiken split time in goal. Neither faced a shot on goal.

Sunday’s matchup with Western Nebraska was canceled because of persistent lighting in the Great Bend area.

The Lady Dragons will play their home opener on Friday against Neosho County. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. at the Azzurri Soccer Complex on 23rd and Cleveland.

Notes: This was the first time that HCC and Maple Woods have played in women’s soccer. … This was HCC’s 38th career victory in the fourth-year program’s history. Of those wins, this was the 29th shutout. … HCC is now 2-2 in season openers.
