COEUR D ALENE, Id – The Hutchinson Community
College women’s soccer team’s incredible postseason run came to an end in
heartbreaking fashion on Friday at the NJCAA District B Tournament at North
Idaho College.
Laramie County scored with only 36 seconds
remaining in the second overtime to eliminate the Lady Dragons 2-1.
Region VI champion Hutchinson ends its season
at 13-6 and marked the
deepest any Lady Dragon team has progressed in the postseason in their
three-year history.
Sophomore Ashley Saiz tied the match at 1-1
when she scored in the 69th minute on pass from career assist leader Johanna
Adolfs.
Laramie County (14-3-1) took a 1-0 lead right
before halftime when Amy Weis scored in the 43rd minute.
In the second overtime, the Lancers scored
just 36 seconds away from the match being decided on penalty kicks when
Megan Erickson scored the game-winner with the Lady Dragon defense sprawling
to save the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carly McArthur, who is
tied for the career lead in goalkeeper victories, was brilliant, posting 11
saves.
Hutchinson employed the same defensive approach that led to victories over
high-powered Butler and Johnson County in the Region VI Tournament. HCC was
able to only muster three shots on goal. Laramie County keeper Lauren Pelkey
had two saves.
Laramie County will face North Idaho on Saturday for the right to compete at
the NJCAA National Tournament in Albany, Ga.
This was only the second overtime game in HCC
history. The Lady Dragons are now 0-2 in overtime games.
A full recap of HCC’s district match will be
posted when the team returns from Idaho.
