COUER D’ ALENE, Id. – The Region VI champion
Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team arrived in Idaho Thursday
morning and wasted no time in getting to practice for the NJCAA District B
Tournament at North Idaho College.
Hutchinson (13-5) will take on Laramie County
Community College of Cheyenne, Wyo., on Friday at 2 p.m. PT. If the Lady
Dragons can win that contest, they would then move on to face District host
North Idaho College at Noon PT on Saturday for the right to advance to the
NJCAA National Tournament.
It took approximately 30 hours to travel from
Hutchinson to Coeur D Alene.
HCC advanced to the district tournament by
finishing sixth overall in the Jayhawk Conference. The Lady Dragons then
knocked off No. regional seed Coffeyville on the road, No. 2 Butler in the
semifinals and top-seeded Johnson County in the Region VI championship match
last Sunday in Topeka.
The Lady Dragons allowed just two goals in
the regional tournament. Sophomore Jenny Yukich scored three goals,
including game-winners against both Butler and Johnson County. Yukich, HCC
career goal scorer and points leader, has 17 goals this season.
Starting sophomore goalkeeper Carly McArthur
(10-5 in 2007) had 21 saves and a goals-against average of 0.67 in the
regional tournament. McArthur is tied for the career lead in victories by an
HCC goalkeeper.
Laramie County finished its season 13-3-1.
The Lancers are led by Kim Yukuta, who has scored a team-high 13 goals.
Laramie County and Hutchinson faced some common foes in Butler and Barton
County. Laramie defeated Butler squad 4-1 and demolished Barton 5-0. HCC
split the season series with Butler, and lost the only contest against
Barton County, 2-1.
The Lancers overpowered Western Nebraska 5-1
in the Region IX championship.
North Idaho (10-5-3) had to go to overtime to win the Region XVIII championship.
The Cardinals defeated Western Nevada 2-1 in the championship match. It was
North Idaho’s fifth consecutive victory. The Cardinals are 7-0-2 in their
last nine games.
North Idaho made the trip to Cheyenne to face
Laramie County early in the season, with Laramie dominating the contest at
5-0.
Rachel Lopez is the Cardinals’ top scorer
with nine goals.
The winner of District B will move on to
Albany, Ga., and the national tournament Nov. 15-18.
