Chris
Young is now in his seventh season as the head coach of the Blue Dragon men’s
golf team.
Young came
to HCC from the University of Nebraska where he was an assistant coach for the
Lady Husker women’s basketball program under Angela Beck for three years.
Young was
also an assistant coach for the Lady Dragon women’s basketball team for two
seasons before taking over as men’s golf head coach.
Last
season, Young led a young group of Blue Dragon golfers to a 13th-place finish in
the nation.
The 2004-05
Blue Dragons had their first Jayhawk Conference champion since 1984 in Zac
Fisher and first league runner-up in Tyler Way. HCC finished second in the
Jayhawk Conference for the second year in a row.
In 2004,
the Blue Dragon golf program was in uncharted territory after finishing a
program-best seventh at the 2004 NJCAA National Tournament at Mariah Hills
Country Club in Dodge City. The Dragons were the top-finishing Jayhawk
Conference team.
That was
the fourth-straight year the Blue Dragons have qualified for the Division I
national tournament. Two years ago, HCC placed 10th.
Young has
coached two of the three NJCAA All-Americans that HCC has had over the years.
Jeremiah
Nelson was a All-American with the Blue Dragons, helping them reach their lofty
national placing in 2003. Adam Young was an All-American in 2004 is leading the
Blue Dragons to their best finish all-time in a national championship
tournament.
Young is a
native of Kearney, Neb. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney
in 1993.
Young’s
wife, Kricket, is a pediatric dentist at the Guasman and Young Dental Office.
The couple has three children: Cole, 7; Kennedy, 4; and Carter, 2.
