WICHITA –All-American Dale
Middleton has stepped into the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf
teams’ No. 1 slot quite nicely this season.
The sophomore from Coventry,
England won his second-straight Jayhawk Conference-designated tournament on
Monday, shooting a 6-over 148 at tough Terradyne Country Club.
“Dale is playing very well,”
HCC head coach Chris Young said. “He putted very consistently today. His
second-round score doesn’t indicate how consistent he played. He got into
trouble on two holes, but other than that, he was very consistent.”
Middleton’s efforts couldn’t
help the Blue Dragons from keeping a five-shot team lead after the morning
round on Monday. Johnson County rallied back to win its second-straight team
crown, defeating Hutchison by four strokes (611-615). Dodge City was third
at 626.
HCC shot a 304 in the
opening round and led Johnson County by five strokes. But the Blue Dragons
ballooned to a 312, their worst single round of the young season. The
Cavaliers carded a 302 in the afternoon to overtake Hutchinson.
“It’s a little disappointing
to lose like we did,” said Young, whose team has two second-place finishes
after 2 of 6 designated league tournaments. “We had some big numbers out
there. If we don’t have those, we win the tournament. I think we got a
little tired in the afternoon round both physically and mentally.”
Middleton shot a 1-under 70
in the opening round, but had two bad holes in the afternoon round and
posted a 78. Still it was good enough for him to take his second-straight
league crown.
Two other Blue Dragons
earned Top 10 finishes on Monday.
Sophomore Ben Lowman placed
sixth with a 154, shooting rounds of 78 and 76. Lowman had his second Top
10-league finish.
Freshman Craig Howell also
scored in his second-straight Jayhawk tournament with a 10-place showing
shooting 156 after rounds of 77 and 79.
Freshman Nick Seiler was two
strokes out of the Top 10, finishing 12th with a 158 (79-79). Freshman Sam
Schulte was 19th with a 164 (80-84).
The Blue Dragons will next
compete in the Dodge City Invitational, a non-conference tournament, at
Garden City’s Buffalo Dunes Country Club next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21
and 22.
