WINFIELD, Kan. –
All-American Dale Middleton picked up where he left off in his freshman
season, earning medalist honors in the first of six Jayhawk
Conference-designated tournaments of the season on Monday at Quail Ridge
Golf Club.
The two-time defending
Jayhawk Conference team champion Blue Dragons finished second behind Johnson
County in the one-day, 36-hole tournament. The Cavaliers shot 588, while the
Blue Dragons struggled in the afternoon round to finish at 598.
“We did some good things
today,” HCC head coach Chris Young said. “Having three freshmen and only one
player who had significant time last season, we did alright.”
Middleton, one of two HCC
sophomores on the roster who finished sixth at the 2009 NJCAA championships,
set the early pace with a 5-under-par 67 in the opening round. Paired with
his afternoon, 1-over 73, Middleton captured his first collegiate individual
championship with 36-hole 4-under 140. Middleton held off Johnson County’s
Trevor Johansen, who shot 141 (69-72).
Two other Blue Dragons
earned conference points in the season opener on Monday.
Sophomore Ben Lowman had
rounds of 72 and 79 for a 149 to finish fifth. Freshman Craig Howell was
ninth at 151 (72-79).
Freshman Nick Weiler was
24th at 158 (72-77) and freshman Sam Schulte was 26th at 159 (80-79).
“We showed today we are
capable of shooting low scores, but with a 16-stroke difference between
rounds, we are inconsistent. I would have been happier with a pair of 297s.
We are taking too many big numbers on some holes.”
The Blue Dragons will next
play in two weeks in the second Jayhawk Conference-designated tournament at
Terradyne Country Club in Wichita.
