HESSTON – The Hutchinson Community College
men’s golf team shot a sizzling 4-over-par 288 in the final round on Monday
to capture the second Jayhawk Conference Designated Tournament of the
2007-08 golf season at the Hesston Country Club.
Led by sophomore Nick Hague’s second-round
1-under 70, the Blue Dragons vaulted past Johnson County to take the
tournament team title as well as the overall lead in the Jayhawk Conference
season standings.
Through 2 of 6 events, the Blue Dragons, the
2006 Jayhawk Conference and 2007 Region VI/District III champions, have nine
team points to lead the Cavaliers by one point and defending league champ
Dodge City by two points.
The final fall conference-designated
tournament will be Oct. 7-8 at Quail Ridge Golf Club in Winfield. Before
that, the Dragons will compete in the Panhandle State Invitational on Oct.
1-2 in Guymon, Okla.
The Dragons opened the 36-hole event with a
team score of 298 and trailed Johnson County by three strokes. But the
Dragons shot their low round of the season in the afternoon session, posting
a tournament-low 288 on the Par-71 course.
The 288 is the season-low for any Jayhawk
Conference team in a league tournament this season.
“We can’t win the conference in one
tournament, but we can lose the conference in one tournament,” HCC head
coach Chris Young said. “But right now, I couldn’t be happier with the way
we’re playing.”
Hague’s 70 – which tied teammate Alex
Wasinger for the second-lowest individual round of the tournament – led the
way in the afternoon round, but right on his heels were Branson Real’s
even-par 71, Wasinger’s 73 and Wes Nichols’ 74.
Johnson County carded a 305 in the second
round. Dodge City moved past the Cavaliers for second place shooting 296 in
the second round and a 596 overall to finish 10 strokes behind the Blue
Dragons. Johnson County was 14 shots back at 600.
Three Blue Dragons finished in the Top 10 on
Monday, led Wasinger, the reigning Region VI champion. He set the early pace
for Hutchinson with a 1-under 70 and finished second overall with a 143, two
strokes behind individual champion Tommy Zuzelski of Dodge City, who needed
a 4-under 67 in the second round to take medalist honors.
“I told Alex ‘Look at the big picture. This
is only the second of six tournaments,’ ” Young said. “If he presses there,
he might finish six or seventh. If he just pars in … winning would be great,
but team-wise, we needed par. He took the team approach, and Alex should be
commended for that.”
Real finished in a tie for fourth with
Coffeyville’s Kyler Brown after rounds of 74 and 71 for a 145.
Real takes over the Jayhawk Conference
individual standings lead with 15.5 points. Real finished second in the
season-opening league tournament. Wasinger moves from a tie for ninth all
the way to second with 10.5 points.
Hague had to rebound from a morning round of
6-over 77 to card his 70 in the afternoon and finished seventh overall with
a 147.
Nichols also had a much better second round.
After an opening-round 83, Nichols carded his 74 in the afternoon to finish
tied for 21st at 157.
Hague and Nichols are tied for 13th and 14th,
respectively, in the league individual standings.
Sophomore Chris Boothman tied for 24th with a
159 (77-82).
